Diorama
An engrossing, gritty and adrenalin-fueled coming of age novel, marked by displacement and never-closing family wounds. 'There's much to admire in this layered work' Publishers WeeklyCecília Matzenbacher is a taxidermist working in Northern California. Her passion of restoring once-living things and constructing dioramas of enclosed immobilized worlds is all-encompassing. But when it comes to reconstructing her own history, Cecília's knack for composition frays. When news comes that her father's heart is failing and she may need to return home to Brazil to see him before it's too late, Cecília's past won't stay fixed like a specimen behind glass any longer. Now, she threads the past and present, and reveals the secrets, lies, and taboo affairs that ignited the media frenzy and investigation of the murder. Elites and Democracy
Why elites always rule democracies—and why recognizing that reality can help us respond to the crisis of democracy todayA central paradox of democracies is that they are always ruled by elites. What can democracy mean in this context? Today, it is often said that a populist revolt against elites is driving democratic politics throughout the West. But in Elites and Democracy, Hugo Drochon argues that democracy is more accurately and usefully understood as a perpetual struggle among competing elites—between rising elites and ruling elites. Real political change comes from the interaction between social movements and elite political institutions such as parties. But, although true democracy—the rule of the people—may never be achieved, striving towards it can bring about worthwhile democratic results. At the turn of the twentieth century, Gaetano Mosca, Vilfredo Pareto, and Robert Michels put forward “elite” theories of democracy and gave us terms such as the “ruling class” and “elites” itself. Drawing on their work and tracing the history of democratic thought through figures such as Joseph Schumpeter, Robert Dahl, C. Wright Mills, and Raymond Aron, Elites and Democracy reveals that this fundamentally elitist basis of democracy—democracy understood as competition between elites—was there all along. The challenge is to think it anew.Moving away from procedural or principled conceptions of democracy, Elites and Democracy develops a dynamic theory of democracy, one grounded in movement. With current politics defined by a populist backlash against elites, dynamic democracy offers the tools we urgently need to understand our contemporary predicament and to act upon it.
A teremtés tava
„Sadie Smith” – így mutatkozik be a francia vidéken található anarchista kommuna tagjainak a harmincnégy éves amerikai nő, aki tökéletes fedősztorival érkezik elvégezni küldetését.

The Shop on Hidden Lane
New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz dives into an enthralling new romantic suspense novel filled with deeply entrenched grudges, psychic dangers, and a conspiracy that threatens not only two families but also the entire paranormal community. The Harper and the Wells families have regarded each other with deep suspicion for four generations. The Harpers have been known to offer their psychic talents for less-than-legal purposes, and the powerful Wells clan has a reputation for playing both sides of the street. But for all the years of history and distrust between them, there is a mysterious pact binding the two. They share the responsibility for protecting a long-buried and very dangerous secret. Sophy Harper and Luke Wells are shocked to learn that her aunt and his uncle have been sleeping together-and now they are both missing. Not only that, but the last traces of them are at the scene of a murder soaked in negative paranormal energy. Clearly, someone is willing to kill to obtain the secret their families have been charged with protecting. Despite their mutual distrust, which, as far as Sophy is concerned extends to Luke's hellhound of a dog, they both know that the terms of the pact must be honored. Their investigation uncovers a psychic trail leading to a bizarre desert art colony where nothing is as it seems. But Luke and Sophy are concealing a few secrets, too. By a strange twist of fate, a Harper and a Wells have no choice but to trust each other and the fierce attraction that is binding them as surely as the pact between the families. The Political Economy of Security
The complex and multifaceted relationship between economic factors and conflictIn this book, Stephen Brooks provides a systematic empirical and theoretical examination of how economic factors influence security affairs. Empirically, he analyzes how economic variables of all kinds affect interstate war, terrorism, and civil war; in total, sixteen pathways are examined. Brooks shows that the relationship between economic factors and conflict is complex and multifaceted; discrete economic factors—such as international trade, economic development, and globalized manufacturing, to name a few—are sometimes helpful for promoting peace and stability, but at other times are detrimental. Brooks also develops a stronger theoretical foundation for guiding future research on the economics-security interaction. Drawing on Adam Smith, he provides a more complete range of answers to the three key conceptual questions analysts must consider: how economic goals relate to security goals; what economic factors to focus on; and how economic actors influence security policies. Combining an innovative theoretical understanding with empirical rigor, Brooks’s account will reshape our understanding of the political economy of security.
Women, Resistance and Revolution : A History of Women and Revolution in the Modern World
In Women, Resistance and Revolution, Sheila Rowbotham traces four centuries of feminist struggle and revolutionary politics. She reveals how women have confronted the dual challenges of an unjust state system and patriarchal social prejudice. First published in 1972, Women, Resistance and Revolution is a major statement of second-wave feminism on the need for revolution within the revolution. It is also a rich and expansive history of radical consciousness.
Rowbotham charts the acceleration of feminist activity and theory after the French Revolution, despite the ambiguities of 'liberty, equality, fraternity' for women. She examines pivotal works such as Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Flora Tristan's Workers' Union and Engels's Origin of the Family, showing how women's liberation became a live and often explosive issue in emerging socialist movements. Her narrative spans feminist currents in revolutionary Russia and China, exploring fascinating creative experiments during early Bolshevik rule, and extends to women's roles in anti-colonial struggles in Algeria, Cuba and Vietnam.
This classic work remains as urgent, vivid and inspiring as ever.
