Buckinghamshire & East Berkshire

Of all the counties surrounding London, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire are most closely associated with the title 'home counties' and both contain large stretches of what is thought of as quintessential English countryside. The Chilterns dominate the south, a plateau-like maze of chalk hills covered with beechwoods, villages and fields rising from the Thames Valley to a steep northern escarpment, and at its foot the fertile farmland of the Vale of Aylesbury stretches northwards towards the River Great Ouse and the start of the Midlands beyond. Across the Thames lies the more densely populated East Berkshire, which nevertheless still boasts some wonderful countryside, including the landscaped parkland of Windsor Castle.

A Room of One's Own

A Room of One’s Own is an American classic that has been inspiring readers since its initial publication in 1929. Based on two lectures that Woolf delivered at the University of Cambridge, this collection of extended essays highlights the importance of education and independence for aspiring writers. Woolf calls for the inclusion of more female voices in the literary canon, and outlines the steps needed for more women to gain access to writing careers. Still relevant to this day, readers of all kinds will take inspiration from Woolf’s commitment to creating inclusion in the creative space, and her dedication to creating art despite those who would deny her. With a new foreword by a modern author, readers will gain insight into the ways that Virginia Woolfe’s teachings still influence modern creatives.

The Snowbirds

Kim and Grant are at a turning point. A couple for thirty years, their 'separate but together' partnership is running up against the realities of late middle age: Grant’s mother has died, the college where he taught philosophy was shuttered, and their twin girls are grown and gone. Escaping the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter for the hot desert sun of Palm Springs seems as good a solution as any to the more intractable problems they face. When they arrive at Le Desert, a quirky condo community where everyone knows everyone’s business, Kim immediately embraces the opportunity to make new friends and explore a more adventurous side of her personality. Meanwhile, Grant struggles to find his footing in this unfamiliar landscape, leaving Kim to wonder if their relationship can survive the snowbird season. But when Grant goes missing on a hike in the Palm Springs mountains, Kim is forced to consider two terrifying outcomes: either Grant is truly lost, or this time, he’s really left her. Is it ever too late to become the person we wanted to be—and is there still time to change into someone better? The exhilarating, but often confusing transitions of midlife are pitched against the promise and glamour of Palm Springs in this tender, honest story of what it takes to commit to someone for a lifetime. With compassion and humour, Clancy explores the redemptive power of finding ourselves, and of being found.

Place-Names and Landholding in Early Medieval England

This book discusses how various recurrent early medieval place-names ending in tun might have originated in response to social, economic, political or religious factors. It considers specifically whether these names might, as some scholars have suggested, reflect a possible function related to one or more aspects of early medieval society but which is not apparent from their etymology. It examines studies of names such as Stretton, Eaton, Burton and Kingston and questions recent theories around suggested functions for these places. The author proposes that most of these recurrent compounds named a land unit distinguished by a simple topographical feature or by the name or status of the landholder rather than by a presumed function. She also considers the hypothesis that the perceived concentration of certain recurrent names in clusters, largely in the central and southern regions of England, was the result of a deliberate designation of these places to provide a function in the strategic defence and administration of Mercia during the eighth and early ninth centuries, with some other kingdoms, especially Wessex, following the Mercian example. She has sought to explain why there is not enough evidence to substantiate, or disprove, the hypothesis about clusters of ‘functional’ place-names and at the same time to show that there is enough evidence to cast doubt on that hypothesis and the nature of the data used to support it. The meaning and uses of tun, regarded as the commonest element in English place-names, are part of the argument presented in this book. In the light of archaeological and related research in recent decades, some of the past translations of tun are no longer tenable. This book argues for a general meaning of a defined area of land, held as a unit with rights over the land and its people. The widespread use of tun reflects a society where landholding was essential to survival and for wealth and power.

The Sordid Image

Drawing on the cinematic oeuvre of Ripstein and Garciadiego to reconceptualize the idea of the sordid The sordid is not an ideology, an affect, or even a form of taste or sensibility. It is, Agustín Zarzosa argues, an image and an evocation of the process of degradation. The Sordid Image: The Naturalist Cinema of Arturo Ripstein and Paz Alicia Garciadiego offers the first sustained study of this pivotal filmmaker-screenwriter pair, drawing on their multidecade collaborations to reframe an enduring problem of film theory: how to represent marginalized people. Together, Ripstein and Garciadiego have constructed a recognizable cinematic world filled with social outcasts, characterized by self-degradation and unreason, and set within squalid environments. Inscribing the Ripsteinian universe within the literary and cinematic traditions of naturalism, this book theorizes the notion of the sordid to examine the partners' unique and epoch-defining films. We can, Zarzosa contends, understand the sordid as a cinematic image, with its specific components and pleasures, recasting questions of authorship, mise-en-scene, spectatorship, genre, and language.

Grounded

We know the environment is in trouble—and we’re seeing direct effects on human health as a result. Only when we restore our natural connection with the earth can we help to heal it and ourselves. This is the premise of Grounded, a clarion call and revolutionary guide from author Dr. Erin Yu-Juin McMorrow. Based on current trends, it’s estimated that over 90% of the earth’s soils could become degraded by 2050, affecting food production, flooding, and clean water supplies. This isn’t a doomsday prophecy—it is our realistic future if we don’t take action now. In this revised and updated edition, McMorrow provides tools and practices to transform ourselves, our socioeconomic systems, and the environment that sustains. It’s time to ground ourselves, returning to a cyclical, regenerative style of living, eating, loving, and dying. “Being grounded involves rooting within ourselves to expand in the world,” explains McMorrow. “It means navigating from a place of power, clarity, creativity, and balance.”Explore the ecological and spiritual basis of our existing climate crises—including what’s happening with our soil and carbon cycles—to understand how we’ve gotten into our current state. Grounded gives us the wisdom and guidance to do the sacred work of reconnecting with the divine feminine and initiating transformation to address our carbon legacy and save our planet (and ourselves).
