"Reload" je siedmy štúdiový album, ktorý vyšiel 18. novembra 1997 prostredníctvom vydavateľstva Elektra Records. Album je pokračovaním albumu Load, ktorý vyšiel v predchádzajúcom roku, a zároveň posledným štúdiovým albumom Metallicy, na ktorom účinkoval basgitarista Jason Newsted. Reload debutoval na prvom mieste v rebríčku Billboard 200 s predajom 436 000 kópií v prvom týždni. Album bol nahraný za tri týždne s producentom Flemmingom Rasmussenom v Sweet Silence Studios v Kodani v Dánsku. Umelecké dielo, založené na koncepte kapely, zobrazuje elektrické kreslo zasiahnuté bleskom prúdiacim z loga kapely. Názov bol prevzatý z pasáže románu Stephena Kinga The Stand, v ktorej postava používa frázu na označenie popravy elektrickým kreslom. Ride the Lightning vyvrcholil na 100. mieste v rebríčku Billboard 200 prakticky bez rádiového vplyvu. Hoci sa pôvodne pre americký trh vytlačilo 75 000 kópií, do novembra 1987 sa z albumu predalo pol milióna.
