South Wales: A National Bus Company
South Wales Transport, as a National Bus Company, served a large and diverse area of South West Wales, from Port Talbot in the east, throughout the industrial Swansea Valley and City, and out across rural West Wales to the remote Pembrokeshire coast. It had grown following National Bus Company’s acquisition of BET/THC bus companies in South Wales. With the resulting overlapping areas of services, NBC reorganised its operations and from January 1971 South Wales Transport took control of United Welsh Services, Thomas Brothers (Port Talbot) and Neath & Cardiff Luxury Coaches. In 1972 Western Welsh services from Neath and Haverfordwest were also transferred to South Wales Transport, leaving Western Welsh only operating to the east of South Wales Transport. The outcome of these four acquisitions was a fascinating and diverse fleet, a rich mix of BTC and BET vehicles, an early user of Minibuses, Inter-urban joint coach services and the well-known AEC Regents, including the short version for Gower services. In this book you are taken on a fascinating pictorial journey back to the 1970s and early 1980s when De Cymru Poppy Red buses could still be seen climbing steeply up to Townhill from the centre of Swansea, through the industrial Lower Swansea Valley and to the far distant rural lanes around Haverfordwest.
British Airways in 100 Objects
British Airways has an almost unique history. Spanning over a century from the first flight of Aircraft Transport and Travel Ltd from London to Paris in 1919 to the modern fuel-efficient aircraft of its current fleet, British Airways has proudly connected Britain to the World and the World to Britain. Over that journey through the rapidly evolving early years of pioneering aviation, taking days to cross continents with biplanes and seaplanes, through the post-war piston-engine luxury, the iconic jet age of the fabulous Boeing 707 and 747, the supersonic marvel of Concorde into the modern era of travel, British Airways has seen many historic events and carried literally billions of customers. Along the way that journey has generated vast amounts of treasured items, many of which are now displayed or stored at British Airways headquarters near Heathrow in its truly incredible museum, the Speedbird Centre. Much of the archive has true national importance and is kept as part of the nation’s heritage. From simple in-flight mementos to the Olympic torch, the items featured in this book represent just a flavour of that collection and bring decades of flight to life.
Anne Boleyn's First Love
In the Tudor court, love blossomed when Henry Percy met Anne Boleyn. However, their romance was abruptly torn apart by Cardinal Wolsey, who chastised Percy, an earl’s son, for choosing to marry the daughter of a mere knight. Despite a spirited defence, Percy was ordered to no longer see her. Percy was forced into marrying Mary Talbot, daughter of the fourth Earl of Shrewsbury. The loveless match proved acrimonious and bitter, culminating in Mary accusing her husband of trying to poison her. After a quarrel in which Percy, now sixth Earl of Northumberland, mentioned his betrothal to Anne Boleyn, Mary wrote to her father to warn King Henry VIII that her husband and Anne had been precontracted, hoping to stop the king marrying her. But there was more to Henry Percy than being Anne’s first love. Though often ill, he executed all the rough and arduous duties of Scottish border warfare, proving to be a strong and effective Warden of the North. His was a full life, though not a particularly happy one. In June 1537, aged thirty-five and old before his time, he died poor and ostensibly alone. He was buried on the same day he died, the crown denying him even the usual aristocratic funeral. In the first full-length biography of this fascinating man, Jan-Marie Knights tells a story of love, duty and loss.
The Latecomer's Rise
In The Latecomer's Rise, Muyang Chen reveals the nature and impact of a rapidly growing form of international lending: Chinese development finance. Over the past few decades, China has become the world's largest provider of bilateral development finance. Through its two national policy banks, the China Development Bank (CDB) and the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim), it has funded infrastructure and industrial projects in numerous emerging markets and developing countries. Yet this very surge and magnitude of capital has raised questions about the characteristics of Chinese bilateral lending and its repercussions on the international order. Drawing on a variety of novel Chinese primary sources, including interviews and official bank documents, Chen pinpoints the distinctiveness of Chinese bilateral development finance, explains its origins, and analyzes its effects. She compares Chinese policy banks with their foreign counterparts to show that the CDB and China Exim, while state-supported, are in fact also market-oriented - they are as much government organs as they are profit-driven financial agencies that serve both state and firms' interests. This approach, which emerged out of China's particular economic history, suggests that Chinese overseas lending is not merely a tool of economic statecraft that challenges Western-led economic regimes. Instead, China's responses to extant rules, norms, and practices across given issue areas have varied between contestation and convergence. Rich with empirical detail and penetrating insights, The Latecomer's Rise demystifies the little-known workings of Chinese development finance to revise our conceptions of China's role in the international financial system.

The Sudans
The Sudans tells the story of the African Union's efforts to make peace in the Sudans during the years 2009 to 2013. It details the work of the AU High-Level Panel, led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, to resolve the war in Darfur, promote democracy in Sudan, steer the independence of South Sudan, and make peace between Sudan and South Sudan. It was Africa's most ambitious peace-making effort. Meticulously documenting every step, Alex de Waal and Willow Berridge show how Mbeki's team handled disputes over borders, resources, and citizenship, and channeled fractious international actors into a consensus. They document the panel's consultative, people-focused strategy in Darfur and its patient, unflagging mediation between north and south. Ultimately, however, the leaders of Sudan and South Sudan squandered opportunities to establish two viable, mutually supporting states, setting both countries on the path toward calamity. Authoritative and clear-eyed, The Sudans pulls back the curtain on this pioneering effort, demonstrating the potential of African-led peacemaking.

Ealing: A Potted History
For much of its history Ealing was a rural village in Middlesex, outside London. Improved communications encouraged first its development as a market garden for the capital and later as an attractive suburb in West London, nicknamed ‘Queen of the Suburbs’. In this book, local historians Dr Jonathan Oates and Paul Howard Lang look back over the centuries to uncover the fascinating history of the district. The new public buildings, churches and chapels played an important role alongside large-scale housing developments from the nineteenth century onwards. Leisure was important in Ealing too. The inhabitants of Ealing included many famous names recorded by blue plaques today but all benefitted from the growth of shopping centres in the area. Not only was it well-known for its open spaces but is also the home of film studios. The stories of Ealing’s places and people bring the history to life, together with illustrations to show where reminders of the area’s past can still be found.Illustrated throughout, this accessible historical portrait of the transformation that Ealing has undergone through the ages will be of great interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to the district.

Waylon University 4: To ti slibuju
A Serena opravdu utekla.
Proč o ni přes to všechno pořád usiluje?
Získá nový hvězdný quarterback vysněnou dívku, nebo udělá největší chybu svého života?

John Constantine Hellblazer
Nyní, o šestnáct let později, ovoce tehdejšího zoufalého činu dozrálo, puklo a zalilo Londýn shnilou šťávou. A Constantine se musí postavit tváří v tvář noční můře, kterou vyvolal.
Roman Life on Hadrian’s Wall
Pioneering merchants and traders, soldiers’ wives and children, and slaves are among the many civilians who settled alongside the Roman army at Hadrian’s Wall. These people’s lives can be traced through the things they left behind. Children lost socks and wooden swords when they played, and wives and daughters wore fancy hairpins that fell out when they went to the bathhouses. Hunting dogs were fed and bred for soldiers’ sport, and slaves kept fort hypocausts burning. Roman Life on Hadrian’s Wall pieces together this wide-ranging archaeological evidence to reveal these people’s stories. It will inform and change how you think about everyday Roman life at this remote frontier, the most-visited Roman remains in Britain.
Trams and Trolleybuses in Preservation
Nowadays, with concerns about air quality in our town centres, many new cars, vans and buses are hybrid or fully electric. However, over a century ago zero-emission public transport dominated our towns and cities in the form of electric trams and trolleybuses. Yet, in the post-war era these fell out of favour and were replaced by diesel buses. Now trams have made a comeback in some cities, although trolleybuses no longer operate in Britain. Many examples of trams and trolleybuses have survived into preservation. There are even a handful of specialist museum sites where wiring has been installed so that these vehicles can once again operate, while many examples can be found on static display in other museum collections. Malcolm Batten presents a fascinating selection of the vehicles preserved and locations where trams and trolleybuses can be found at work or on display.
Renault Clio
Launched in 1990 as the successor to the groundbreaking Renault 5, the Renault Clio had a hard act to follow. As Mark Bradbury shows, however, the Clio not only matched but surpassed the Renault 5, becoming one of Europe’s bestselling small cars and winning the European Car of the Year Award twice, a record only matched by the Volkswagen Golf. Its success in the United Kingdom owed much to an impressive marketing campaign, including the ‘Nicole and Papa’ television advertisements. This thoroughly researched book covers the design and development of the Clio and the ongoing technical changes, improvements and facelifts that would take it through five generations. The book also covers the ‘hot’ versions such as the Renault Sport, Gordini and Williams, and the Clio’s involvement in motorsport and rallying. Including feedback from British road tests and accompanied by a wide range of photographs, this is a concise, readable and revealing account of one of Europe’s most successful small cars.
