Quantum physics is the cornerstone of our world. Yet, at the same time, it's one of the hardest subjects for ordinary mortals to grasp. In Why Nobody Understands Quantum Physics, a husband-and-wife duo - renowned physicist Frank Verstraete and writer Céline Broeckaert - demystifies the essential science behind how our world works. Together, they unravel the reasons the universe behaves in its weird ways - and just why it's so important to understand them. In this book, you will discover: How symmetry governs the universe The untold history of quantum physics How quantum principles power our gadgets and lives The real essence behind quantum puzzles and discoveries Part history and part popular science, Why Nobody Understands Quantum Physics serves as a bridge between the complex world of quantum physics and the curious mind.

Mosaics and Micro Mosaics

From the earliest mosaics in 4th century BCE Greece and the Byzantine splendour of Hagia Sophia to the celebratory frieze encircling the Royal Albert Hall, and Eduardo Paolozzi's commission for the London Underground, this book reveals the technical and stylistic evolution of mosaic, and its prominence in political, public and civic spaces. Drawing on a conference at the V&A, supported by the Gilbert Trust for the Arts, this volume provides both a sweeping history of the craft and fascinating insight into key events. These include the competition judged by Titian, Tintoretto, Schiavone and Veronese in 16th century Venice to choose a mosaicist for St Mark's Basilica and the prominence of mosaic in Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. The volume also considers the practical - the collection and preservation of micromosaics and also their creation through an interview with Maurizio Fiorvanti, a jeweller who has mastered the technique of micromosaics and continues to create exquisite pieces from his studio in Rome.

Noisy Valley

“It’s about what ordinary people do, because what we do... is quite extraordinary.”Protest matters, and never more so than today – and yet our rights around dissent have been eroded in law. Noisy Valley is a beautifully illustrated work of graphic non-fiction exploring the importance of protest, and what it can achieve, through the voices of one vibrant community. In every neighbourhood there are the activists, the ones who raise their voices. Myfanwy Tristram visited the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, inviting local people to recount their memories of the times they’d refused to take things lying down. Noisy Valley is the result: a graphic retelling of protests both past and present. The area is best known for the miners’ strikes of the 1980s (and their support from the LGBT movement as documented in the film Pride), but its spirit of righteous dissent continues to rise against injustice. These stories tell how communities and individuals pushed back on a landfill site that poisoned local streams, a waste processing plant that destroyed an area of natural beauty, sexism in the workplace, and the closure of the local hospital. We dip into the historic Aldermaston marches and the Greenham women’s peace camp too. Noisy Valley is a testament to protestors who – whatever the political climate – have believed in their power to get things changed.

Thursdays in Nairobi

'Nairobi enchants, like the eyes of a loved one, like their smile, like their kisses, like their caresses, like their very thought.' Thursdays in Nairobi is a personal account of an expat's life in Nairobi, related through a unique collection of vignettes about Kenya´s capital city. Written by Mexican journalist, foreign correspondent and former diplomat Diego Gómez Pickering, and translated from the original Spanish by Aaron Rosenberg, this unique travel narrative offers testimonies about the city's characters, history, neighbourhoods and atmospheres. Writing with affection and intensity, Gómez Pickering reveals Nairobi to be a cosmopolitan, vibrant, unequal and contrasting place where life becomes an addictive, exhilarating experience for both the chronicler and its readers. Join Gómez Pickering in exploring this Equatorial African city, sitting on his shoulder as he peers behind the scenes of diplomatic gatherings and keenly observes political life. Become a fly on the wall during Gómez Pickering's intimate interview with Sarah Onyango Obama, the third wife of Barack Obama's grandfather - and the woman that the former US President calls 'Granny Sarah'. Enjoy safaris within spitting distance of skyscrapers or brave a first-hand account of interethnic violence in East Africa. For something different, venture with the author into Kibera, the continent's largest urban slum, or head out after dark to experience Nairobi's offbeat nightlife (and, vicariously, the sex life of its inhabitants). This unprecedented collection of real-life stories celebrate the beauty, diversity, intrigue and visceral reality of one of Africa's most famous cities. Compelling, authentic and wide-ranging, Thursdays in Nairobi is a portrait of a capital where life is saturated with vitality, where emotions run high, where life is deeply felt. Tree

'Trees are not just living things, but feeling beings, like us. Better keep a watchful eye over them…' Ezo spruce, hinoki, cherry blossoms. Persimmon, maple, cypress. The trees of Japan cast a spell on those who visit its landscape. But as a child, writer Aya Koda realized they were more than objects of beauty. Gifted a sapling by her father, she learned that we depend on trees as much as they do on us - and spent a lifetime trying to understand them. Mesmerising and poignant, Tree is written in a Japanese genre called zuihitsu which means 'following the brush'. Here we follow Aya Koda on a journey to discover Japan's most remarkable trees. As she witnesses landslides and forests of falling ash, she encounters fresh saplings and ancient, ungovernable roots, learning how each tree contains its own unique story. Now translated into English for the first time, Koda's work echoes down the generations, reminding us that trees hold a mirror to who we are, and what we leave behind.

To the Sea by Train

THE TOP TEN SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER'Vividly conjures a lost age' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Hugely entertaining' EVENING STANDARD'A feast of anecdotage' SUNDAY TIMESThroughout the twentieth century, the seaside service posters of Britain's railways promised fresh air and frivolity to millions of urban dwellers with the phrase: 'To the sea by train'. A staple of modern British life, the seaside getaway was intertwined with the train, in whose compartments holidaymakers were shunted from smog-choked cities to sandy coves. With his signature wit and anecdotal style, Andrew Martin captures an era defined by its railways: from the development of Brighton and Scarborough into pleasure resorts, and the introduction of bank holidays and two-day weekends, to the advent of cheap flights and the British coast's subsequent decline. Humorous and evocative, To the Sea by Train takes a charming tour through Britain's most beloved pastime. 'A standalone classic' COUNTRY LIFE 'Infectious' SPECTATOR

Everyone's Seen My Tits

'Funny, forthright and illuminating' Grazia'Keeley Hazell is clever, thoughtful and very, very ambitious' Mail on SundayA moving, genuine, and hilarious collection of essays about fame, glamour, infamy, and the power of writing your own story, from Page 3 model turned writer Keeley Hazell. For much of her life, Keeley Hazell has been labelled and pigeonholed. Growing up in a poor working-class family made her a certain kind of person (the kind who scrounged for chicken and chips money and once set a car on fire). Becoming a topless model after winning the Sun newspaper's 'Page 3 Idol' competition made her a certain kind of person (one with big boobs and few thoughts, to hear anyone else tell it). And as glittery as being one of the UK's most successful glamour models may seem, Keeley's fairytale success quickly turned into a nightmare. After becoming a victim of revenge porn and a particularly disastrous interview with a high brow British newspaper, Keeley began re-examining her life. She learned about feminism, objectification, and systemic misogyny on a wonderful journey of personal growth, and with a flick of her hair, quit modelling, walked away from a fat pay check, and moved thousands of miles away from everything she had come to know. Reinventing herself as an actress and writer, she starred in award-winning short films, as well as horrors, dramas, and comedies before facing her most challenging job on the massive hit series Ted Lasso - rewriting what it means to be Keeley both on-screen and in real life. Everyone's Seen My Tits is a powerful, funny, high spirited essay collection. From growing up on a council estate and her tumultuous relationship with fame to overcoming adversity, finding feminism, and finding herself, these essays chronicle one woman's coming-of-age and coming into herself. A personal journey with universal appeal as girls worldwide continue to battle how they are perceived, who they really are, and what they can be.

First on Everest

In 1999 my expedition found George Mallory’s body on Mount Everest. The intense public interest in his tragic fate obscured the other actors in that dramatic story. The pioneers who attempted the first climbs in 1922 and 1924 knew nothing about the mountain other than its height. They had to learn the hard way about the lack of oxygen, the jet-stream winds, the illnesses of altitude, and the vital importance of the Sherpas. They fought cerebral oedema, frostbite, hypothermia and raging thirst in the cold, thin air. They had to find a route, avoid avalanches, and work out what to do when confronted by an insuperable rock climb at extreme altitude. Many of them died.Howard Somervell was Mallory''s closest friend on the mountain in 1922 and 1924. He was an exceptionally gifted man: he had a double first at Cambridge, he was a talented artist and an accomplished musician. He served as a surgeon at the Battle of the Somme during the First World War and was one of the foremost alpinists of the day when he was invited to join the 1922 Mount Everest expedition. After Everest he was awarded an Olympic gold medal for Alpinism in 1924. But in India he will be remembered as a surgeon who dedicated the remainder of his life to healing the sick. Those pioneers showed the way. Somervell took part in the first attempt to climb the mountain, and his oxygen-free height record in 1924 stood for over 50 years. On his descent he sat down alone suffocating from a frost-bitten larynx. He prepared to die, but at the last moment performed a medical manoeuvre which cleared his airway. He survived to struggle back down.Howard Somervell was my cousin, and I am one of the last Everesters left alive to have spoken with a climber from George Mallory’s party.
