Myths and Legends (Boxed Set) 2
A stunning hardcover boxed set celebrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s work inspired by the myths and legends of Europe, featuring double-sided dustjackets. This unique set contains Finn and Hengest, The Story of Kullervo, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun and The Battle of Maldon, along with The Old English Exodus, reprinted for the first time in 50 years. This brand-new boxed set of five hardbacks includes: The Old English Exodus, a translation of the Old English Exodus poem telling the story of the Israelites fleeing Egypt, appearing in print for the first time since it was first published in the 1980s. Tolkien’s aim with this translation was to interpret the poem, reconstruct what the original may have looked like, and demonstrate how it fits into the broader tradition of Old English poetry. Edited by fellow Old English scholar and former pupil, Joan Turville-Petre, this version gives readers the best sense of Tolkien’s methods and his important contributions to understanding this poem along, and includes a new preface by the editor’s son, Thorlac Turville-Petre. Finn and Hengest, the tale of two fifth-century heroes in Northern Europe, is told both in Beowulf and in a fragmentary Anglo-Saxon poem known as The Fight at Finnesburg, but so obscurely and allusively that its interpretation had been a matter of controversy for over 100 years. Tolkien reveals a classic tragedy of divided loyalties, vengeance, blood and death. The Story of Kullervo is a work of fantasy by J.R.R. Tolkien, which tells the powerful story of a doomed young man who is sold into slavery and who swears revenge on the magician who killed his father. ‘Hapless Kullervo’, as Tolkien called him, is a luckless orphan boy with supernatural powers and a tragic destiny, and is perhaps the darkest and most tragic of all J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters. Set ‘In Britain’s land beyond the seas’ during the Age of Chivalry, The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun tells of a childless Breton Lord and Lady and the tragedy that befalls them when Aotrou seeks to remedy their situation with the aid of a magic potion obtained from a corrigan, or malevolent fairy. When the potion succeeds and Itroun bears twins, the corrigan returns seeking her fee, and Aotrou is forced to choose between betraying his marriage and losing his life. In 991 AD, vikings attacked an Anglo-Saxon defence-force led by their duke, Beorhtnoth, resulting in brutal fighting along the banks of the river Blackwater, near Maldon in Essex. The attack was immortalized in the poem, The Battle of Maldon. Written shortly after the battle, the poem survives now as a 325-line fragment, and is an invaluable example of both a heroic tale and the vivid expression of the lost language of our ancestors. Tolkien’s prose translation of the poem is presented by leading Tolkien scholar, Peter Grybauskas, alongside the definitive treatment of The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Tolkien’s own dramatic verse-dialogue inspired by The Battle of Maldon.

The Wind Beneath the Stone
‘Fascinating, strange, groundbreaking research in an area that intersects folklore, history, mythology and strength training’ THE BLINDBOY PODCAST'I found this book, unlike its weighty subject, easy to pick up and hard to put down' PETER ROSS, AUTHOR OF UPON A WHITE HORSEA compelling and heartwarming journey across Ireland to revive the lost tradition of stone lifting. When world kettlebell lifting champion David Keohan heard about old tales of stone lifting, he was captivated. So he set off on a quest to see if he could rediscover any of these famous stones, and whether he could match the feats of the heroes of the past by lifting them to allow the wind beneath the stone once more. Helped by a 1930s archive in which schoolchildren shared their local folklore, Keohan began to travel the country in search of the stones. They were often to be found hidden away in quiet villages or cemeteries, their purpose almost forgotten. But, as he journeyed round Ireland, he met those who recalled the stories of the stones, and the legends attached to them. Soon, others were joining him as he took on the challenge of lifting these pieces of history, the heaviest of which weighed well over 200 kilograms. As Keohan’s efforts gathered more and more attention, he came to realise that this was more than a personal challenge. Stone lifting had become a way for Irish people to reclaim their lost heritage and to come together to celebrate what made their homeland special. The Wind Beneath the Stone is an inspirational story of hope, togetherness and community, revealing how a simple challenge can take on a life of its own.

The Mother Is Restless and She Doesn't Know Why
Crackling with intelligence and wit, a critical memoir about how nihilism might just get you through. ‘Here is how I start: I read Nietzsche. I read Nietzsche in bed, with a chest cold. I highlight things in green and draw exclamation marks in the margins. I text friends. You wouldn’t expect I could be having so much fun reading Nietzsche, I tell them. They are worried about their children, about lockdown, about money, about their marriages. I am reading Nietzsche, I repeat. I text them quotes from Nietzsche. They do not reply.’ Gemma Parker’s parents were impulsively itinerant, and her literary heroes were utterly committed to following their muse, dashing into foreign lands and up mountainsides. To write properly about nihilism, she herself surely needs to go to Paris! But she’s stuck – by a job, by children, then by covid. Nietzsche says that to be worth anything at all, art – and life – needs to break all rules and work itself out from scratch. As Parker reads the great philosopher’s work more deeply – and that of other celebrated nihilists Camus and Beckett – she discovers the life-affirming magic of believing nothing matters. And to find a way of being free, even at home. Both witty and wise, funny and profound, The Mother is Restless opens up fresh ways of thinking about life, for fans of Rachel Cusk, Maggie Nelson and Olivia Laing.
