Someone Like Me

Penny Lancaster counts herself as incredibly lucky. She had a loving upbringing, her life with husband Rod Stewart has spanned continents, she’s made incredible friendships, become part of an amazing family and embraced motherhood. But it’s not all been plain-sailing. From being relentlessly bullied at school and underestimated because of undiagnosed dyslexia, Penny also experienced a harrowing sexual assault as a young girl. This has made her a staunch campaigner for women’s safety and, these days, she regularly puts in hours as a Special Constable for the City of London Police, where her primary concern is making the streets safe for women. She’s also navigated the challenges of having the weight of the world’s scrutiny thrust upon her in her twenties, undergone IVF treatment, supported loved ones through cancer diagnoses, overcome her own depression and manoeuvred through menopause. Amongst a heady mix of royalty, rock legends and renegades, her story is one of resilience. In Someone Like Me Penny tells her full story for the first time, with a natural empathy and humour that she hopes will help others on their own life journey. She shares her wisdom from hard-earned lessons, showing that the key to navigating both storms and sunshine is staying true to you.

Steel River

Steve Nicholls makes an epic journey along the River Tees in north-east England, from the industrial complexes near its estuary to its source high in the Pennine Hills. The Tees estuary was where Steve’s life-long passion for nature was born, launching a long career as a documentary maker. As he travels the length of the eighty-mile river, he uses his years of travelling the world and his work on nature films to place the fauna and flora he encounters along the Tees in a wider context. He weaves together strands of personal experience, nature writing, botany, geology and history with an account of the impact of human industry and agriculture on the Tees and its valley. Steel River is thus a natural and social history of a remarkable river, but also presents the Tees as a universal exemplar of environmental degradation, allowing the author to reflect on – and offer prescriptions for – the broken state of the natural world after 10,000 years of human activity.

Fw 190 Jabo Units in the West

An illustrated study of the Luftwaffe’s iconic Fw 190 Jabo units and their high-speed, low-level attacks on the south coast of England. The service debut of the Fw 190 in the late summer of 1941 marked a quantum leap in the Luftwaffe’s capability to oppose the RAF on the Channel Front. Conceived to be purely a fighter, the type soon revealed its potential as a Jabo fighter-bomber, and the manner in which it was used matured from the ad hoc style of its early operations to highly effective ‘hit-and-run’ coastal raids. This progress was aided both by frequent refinements from Focke-Wulf and the development of sub-types designed specifically for air-to-ground operations, equipping the Fw 190 to deliver useful munitions loads and also to look after itself when meeting British fighter interception. This engaging study sees Luftwaffe historian Malcolm V. Lowe chart the action-packed history of the Fw 190 Jabo force on the Channel Front. Following the aircraft from its origins to its successful strikes on valued targets on England’s south coast and eventual combat during D-Day, the text complements first-hand accounts from both Luftwaffe pilots and their RAF opponents with photographs from private archives and 24 specially commissioned profile artworks.

Rivals in the Storm

'A fascinating, provocative, timely reflection' -- Rory Stewart'Superb' -- Daily ExpressA vivid biography in cinematic snapshots of David Lloyd George, one of the world’s greatest statesmen. Brought up in rural North Wales, David Lloyd George attended neither a grand school nor ancient university. He was very much an outsider. And yet he rose through the ranks with charisma, fierce intelligence and fighting spirit to become, as Churchill put it in his tribute, a man who ‘stood, when at his zenith, without a rival’. But his rise was not without its hardships, and in Rivals in the Storm, experienced MP and author Damian Collins focuses on the impact of Lloyd George’s personality on other leading politicians, in driving progressive reforms through government, changing the course of the First World War to lead the Allies to victory, and cementing Britain’s alliance with America. Covering Lloyd George’s emergence as the dominating political personality in Great Britain to the aftermath of his resignation, this fascinating biography takes you inside the rooms where the important decisions happened, and shows the bitter struggles as well as the triumphs of this great man of his or any other age, who nonetheless fell short of his own high expectations.

Dickens the Enchanter

'Dickensian is a language, not an adjective. Conrad speaks it fluently.' -- Spectator World'Marvellous... the best book on Dickens since G.K. Chesterton’s. -- A. N. Wilson, The OldieA kaleidoscopic investigation of Dickens’s imagination and the world he created. See Dickens as never before in this creative biography, which delves into his novels, journalistic essays and letters to reveal his strange, hilarious but obsessive personal character and the audacity of a mind that set out, as he said, to rearrange the universe. As well as re-examining the great novels, Conrad’s book probes the journalism in which Dickens reports on his risky ventures into the urban underworld. It also describes the celebrated but dangerously over-intense public readings in which, as at a seance, he allowed his most terrifying characters to take possession of him. Ultimately it reveals how the forces of creation and destruction come together in Dickens, who despite his reputation for jollity and effusive sentiment found it increasingly hard to control the madness and violence of his own self-destructive genius. Dickens the Enchanter takes us deep into an imagination whose power and originality struck some contemporaries as godlike while others thought it demonic. If you already love Dickens, it will renew your understanding of him; if you have yet to read him, it will lure you into his astonishing, alarming, enchanted world.

Kokoda 1942–43

An in-depth look at the battles at Kokoda, Milne Bay and Buna-Gona, which saw the Japanese battle the Australians and Americans on Papua. The Japanese invasion of, and ejection from, the Territory of Papua was a six-month long campaign. From July to September 1942, the Japanese, having landed at Buna, advanced towards Port Moresby along the Kokoda Trail (or Track). They were opposed, at first, by Australian militia and later by Australian veterans of the war in North Africa. In September, a Japanese operation intended to support the advance was defeated at Milne Bay. By November, the Japanese had been driven back to their starting point, where, in a two-month siege, American troops joined the Australians to eliminate the Japanese beachhead at Buna. With detailed maps, colourful artwork and period images, historian and Kokoda expert Dr Peter Williams examines the strategies and tactics of both sides, along with the limitations terrain, disease and weather imposed on the armies. It also covers the struggles of the American–Australian alliance, both at high command and on the battlefield. Along with Guadalcanal, the Papuan campaign marks the end of the Japanese advance in the Pacific, and the beginning of the Allied counter-offensive.

Dancer

‘Spins with virtuosic, charismatic brilliance around a core of wilful mystery’ Guardian________________________Russia in the 1940s. A small boy practises spinning on his mother’s wooden floors, entranced by what he can make his body do. His momentum will propel him far from home; we watch him turn, through the lives of his teachers, his partners on and off stage, through the eyes of doormen and shoemakers, hustlers and nurses, through the rehearsal rooms of Moscow to Parisian opera houses to the streets of New York – ablaze as a comet, his light hot enough to catch and burn. Masterfully blending fact and fiction to give an alternative biography of Rudolph Nureyev’s life, Dancer is not only the story of one of the most important artists in history – but a biography of the twentieth century itself. ‘McCann’s agile, muscular prose creates its own energy and rhythm … He has taken one of the most charismatic characters of the twentieth century and created a bold contemporary novel’ Daily Telegraph‘Remarkable … Does full justice to the tragic story of a dancer who was the glory of his generation’ Sunday Times‘Here is an astonishing book. Lula!

'richly rewarding' FINANCIAL TIMES'the definitive biography of Brazil’s president' MONOCLE'a valuable additional source for those following Lula, Brazil and Latin America' THE WEEKFrom the factory floor to the presidency: the extraordinary story of President Lula's fight to change Brazil In October 2022, Lula was once again elected President of Brazil, replacing the far-right strongman Bolsonaro, sparking an insurrection, and exiling the fallen demagogue to the US. Lula won by promising to save the Amazon and to give power back to the Brazilian people. This has long been the dream of Latin American left-wing movements - many of which have ended in corruption, disaster and death. Lula has survived at least three curtain calls. Imprisoned for corruption in the notorious 'Car Wash' scandal, voted out, bullied and beaten, Lula continues to draw huge crowds of workers wherever he goes. He speaks of revolution and comes from the streets of Sao Paulo, and yet he is enmeshed in hidden bank accounts and lobbying scandals. This is the definitive biography of Lula and the history of modern Brazilian politics that gave rise to him. Richard Lapper ran the FT bureau on Latin America for two decades, and lived in Brazil for many years. His previous biography of Bolsonaro was for many the best book on the so-called Trump of the Tropics. Lapper's unparalleled reporting and access allows him to tell the full story - which encapsulates so much of why Latin America's left-wing movements both excite and fascinate us in the West.
