The Vulture

The Vulture was written when Scott-Heron dropped out of his second year at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in late 1968. Scott-Heron couldnt concentrate on his studies because he had the novel boiling up in his head and needed to get it down on p aper. The book was eventually published in 1970 to critical acclaim. Reading it now, 40 years later, it still packs a heavyweight punch. An intricate and intelligent murder mystery, it is soaked in the world of the black Manhattan ghettos of the time , where opportunities for young black men were scarce and the temptation of escaping the prejudice and dismal lives around them with excessive drink and with drugs was strong. In many respects, the novel is still relevant today much of the action and dialogue reads like a contemporary Tarantino or Spike Lee movie. In other ways, the novel seems dated in that fascinating way old black and white photos are a snapshot of its era. The views about women expressed by the male protagonists are hor ribly un PC in many places, women being seen as sex objects and labelled as sluts when they succumb. But although unfortunate, this is accurate enough those views were held by many then and still are .

Come On In!

Bukowski's unmistakable charisma - an ex-down-and-outer who wrote of booze and loneliness in maverick, confident free verse - made him one of the world's most popular poets long before he died in 1994. More than a decade later, death has not slowed his production. This collection is selected from an archive of verse that the author left to be published after his death. It includes poems of love and sex, advice to so-called losers (as he once was) to have confidence in themselves (as he did), gambling laments and humbling poems accepting his own imminent ultimate full stop.

Life of Pi

A stunning illustrated edition of the multi-million selling Man Booker prize-winner. In October 2005 Canongate launched a competition with The Times to find an artist to illustrate Yann Martel's international bestseller. Soon the competition expanded as the Globe and Mail and The Age newspapers also launched a search in Canada and Australia. From thousands of entries, Croatian artist Tomislav Torjanac was chosen as the illustrator for this new edition of Life of Pi. This large-format edition, co mplete with over 40 illustrations and line drawings, will captivate a whole new audience and is the perfect gift for the millions of readers who already adore life of Pi. "My vision of the illustrated edition of Life of Pi is based on paintings from a first person's perspective -- Pi's perspective. The interpretation of what Pi sees is intermeshed with what he feels and it is shown through use of colours, perspective, symbols, hand gestures, etc." The idea behind this approach is a kind of an ex tension of Mr. Martel's idea as expressed in this quote: "It seemed natural that Mr. Patel's story should be told mostly in the first person -- in his voice and through his eyes. But any inaccuracies or mistakes are mine." Tomislav Torjanac

Reading Diary

While travelling in Calgary, Alberto Manguel was struck by how the novel he was reading seemed to reflect the world he was living in. An article in the daily paper would be suddenly illuminated by a passage in the novel; a long reflection would be prompted by a single word. He decided to keep a record of these moments, rereading a book a month, and formed A Reading Diary: a volume of notes, impressions of travel, of friends, of public and private events, all elicited by his reading.

The novel begins against the backdrop of an America devast ated by the depression and takes the Chinaski legend up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The Last Station

Set in the tumultuous last year of Leo Tolstoy's life, The Last Station centres on the battle for his soul waged by his wife and his leading disciple. Torn between his professed doctrine of poverty and chastity on the one hand and the reality of his life of hedonism on the other, Tolstoy makes a dramatic flight from his home. Too ill to continue beyond the tiny station of Astapovo, he believes he is dying alone, while outside over one hundred newspapermen are awaiting hourly reports on his condi tion. Narrated in six different voices, The Last Station is a richly inventive novel that dances bewitchingly between fact and fiction.

Hollywood

Bukowski's alter ego, Henry Chinaski, returns, revelling in his eternal penchant for booze, women and horse-racing as he makes the precarious journey from poet to screenwriter. Based on Bukowski's experiences when working on the film "Barfly", the absurdity and egotism of the film industry are laid bare in this deadpan, touching and funny glimpse into the endless negotiations and back-stabbings of La-la land. "Hollywood" is an irreverent Roman a clef that serves up the beating heart of Hollywood with razor-sharp humour.
