The Ocean Map
The Ocean Map presents our planet through anocean-centred map. It introduces the principles behind different ways ofrepresenting the world, helping readers understand how maps shape the way wesee our planet. Designed for children aged 7-11, the book explores naturalfeatures, human-made structures and ocean habitats, with detailed spreads thatreveal how science, technology and exploration operate in, on and around the ocean. The Keeper of All The Secrets
‘The Keeper of All The Secrets’: Ceramic Art, Botanicals and the Caribbean Market Woman centres around a new work in ceramic by contemporary artist and writer Jacqueline Bishop. Featuring original essays, poetry by Bishop and an extensive interview with the artist, the book considers the role and significance of the market woman, who enabled others living under colonialism to take control of their reproductive agency. With The Keeper of All The Secrets, the artist subverts the traditions of commemoration associated with the medium, using it instead to probe the legacies of colonial plantation systems and the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans, and to celebrate the knowledge and resistance of a female figure who has, until now, been critically overlooked. This book is part of the Royal Museums Greenwich Spotlight series, accessible introductions to some of the most intriguing objects in the collection.
Captain Ogle's Cup
Only one man in British history has ever been knighted for services to combat piracy, but his name ? unlike those of his adversaries ? is practically unknown. In fact, Chaloner Ogle enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy, rising to become Admiral of the Fleet. His spectacular career coincided with the ?golden age? of piracy, when trade in the Atlantic and beyond was threatened by roving bands of sea-robbers. Following a series of incidents on the African coast, Ogle set his sights on one particular robber, Bartholomew Roberts, or ?Black Bart?. The encounter that ensued is recorded in Captain Charles Johnson?s A General History of the Pyrates, published in 1724. Struck by grapeshot, which ripped out his throat, Roberts was killed in an instant. Ogle, however, was denied the chance to capture the pirate when Roberts?s crew threw his corpse overboard. The body was never recovered. The crew, however, suff ered fates that befell many captured pirates: some were hanged, others were sentenced to indentured labour, practically a life sentence in itself. While the exact details of how the coconut cup at the centre of this publication came to be made are unknown, it is a tantalising link to this period of history. The object will be on display during a major new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum from spring 2025 to early 2026.
Charles Hare's Great Escape
This is the story of a young midshipman in the Royal Navy and his audacious escape from Napoleonic France. Only 13 years old when he was captured by the French, Charles Hare spent six years as a prisoner of war before making his break for freedom disguised in a French customs service uniform. This uniform is now in the collection of Royal Museums Greenwich, along with the autobiographical account of his escape. His tale is unique and deeply personal, but it also sheds light on wider histories of customs regulation, conflict and captivity. Charles Hare’s Great Escape: The Story of a Napoleonic Prisoner of War is part of the Royal Museums Greenwich Spotlight series, accessible introductions to some of the most intriguing objects in the collection.
Sea Sick
This eighteenth-century glass bottle – and what it contained – represents an important step in the fight against a disease that once claimed the lives of millions: scurvy. Through notable voyages and afflicted individuals, the physical and psychological manifestations of the deadly ‘sickness of the sea’ are examined in a maritime context. What starts as a story of the often haphazard and ineffective efforts to find a cure becomes a tale of pioneering experiments and the eventual discovery of vitamin C. Royal Observatory Greenwich
When King Charles II signed the royal warrant that led tothe founding of the Royal Observatory in 1675, it was to ensure that Britainwas not left behind other European nations as they pursued global trade andresources. Now, in its 350th year, the 'small observatory within our park atGreenwich' is perhaps the most famous such institution in the world, home tothe historic Prime Meridian of the World, 0 Degrees longitude, and an essentialreference on our clocks, watches, maps and globes. The 100 objects contained within the pages of this bookhighlight the many people, ideas and technologies that contributed to'perfecting the art of navigation' and mapping the stars. They include some ofthe most famous objects in the Royal Observatory's collection, like JohnHarrison's pioneering timekeepers, the Great Equatorial Telescope and theShepherd Motor Clock, along with lesser-known items that document how our ideasabout time and space have changed over the centuries. Instruments, photographs, plans and archival documents tellthe story of the Royal Observatory from its early days as Britain's firststate-funded purpose-built scientific institution, through periods of rapidscientific and social change, all the way to its twilight years at theforefront of astronomical research in the first few decades of the twentiethcentury. Today, the Observatory is once more a working observing site but alsoa heritage centre and home to London's only planetarium, seeking to inform andinspire with stories of discovery, innovation and wonder.
