Rural Studio

For almost ten years, Samuel Mockbee, a recent MacArthur Grant recipient, and his architecture students at Auburn University have been designing and building striking houses and community buildings for impoverished residents of Alabama's Hale County. Using salvaged lumber and bricks, discarded tires, hay and waste cardboard bales, concrete rubble, colored bottles, and old license plates, they create inexpensive buildings that bear the trademark of Mockbee's work, which he describes as "contemporary modernism grounded in Southern culture."In a time of unexampled prosperity, when architectural attention focuses on big, glossy urban projects, the Rural Studio provides an alternative of substance. In addition to being a social welfare venture, the Rural Studio--"Taliesin South" as Mockbee calls it--is also an educational experiment and a prod to the architectural profession to act on its best instincts. In giving students hands-on experience in designing and building something real, it extends their education beyond paper architecture. And in scavenging and reusing a variety of unusual materials, it is a model of sustainable architecture. The work of Rural Studio has struck such a chord-both architecturally and socially--that it has been featured on Oprah, Nightline, and CBS News, as well as in Time and People magazines. The Studio has completed more than a dozen projects, including the Bryant "Hay Bale" House, Harris "Butterfly" House, Yancey Chapel, Akron Chapel, Children's Center, H.E.R.O. Playground, Lewis House, Super Sheds and Pods, Spencer House addition, Farmer's Market, Mason's Bend Community Center, Goat House, and Shannon-Dutley House. These buildings, along with the incredible story of the Rural Studio, the people who live there, and Mockbee and his student architects, are detailed in this colorful book, the first on the subject."I tell my students, it's got to be warm, dry, and noble"--Samuel Mockbee

Stickwork

Using minimal tools and a simple technique of bending, interweaving, and fastening together sticks, artist PatrickDougherty creates works of art inseparable with nature and the landscape. With a dazzling variety of forms seamlesslyintertwined with their context, his sculptures evoke fantastical images of nests, cocoons, cones, castles, and beehives. Over the last twenty-five years, Dougherty has built more than two hundred works throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia that range from stand-alone structures to a kind of modern primitive architecture--every piece mesmerizing in its ability to fly through trees, overtake buildings, and virtually defy gravity. Stickwork, Dougherty's first monograph, features thirty-eight of his organic, dynamic works that twist the line between architecture, landscape, and art. Constructed on-site using locally sourced materials and local volunteer labor, Dougherty's sculptures are tangles of twigs and branches that have been transformed into something unexpected and wild, elegant and artful, and often humorous. Sometimes freestanding, and other times wrapping around trees, buildings, railings, and rooms, they are constructed indoors and in nature. As organic matter, the stick sculptures eventually disintegrate and fade back into the landscape. Featuring a wealth of photographs and drawings documenting the construction process of each remarkable structure, Stickwork preserves the legend of the man who weaves the simplest of materials into a singular artistic triumph.

The Chef Says

"Clean plates don't lie." - Dan Barber. Great chefs are not self-effacing or meek - there's no room for indecision in the professional kitchen, where the slightest stumble can send an entire restaurant into the weeds. So it follows that even in quieter moments, what chefs have to say is usually opinionated and always illuminating. The Chef Says invites readers to the ultimate food-lover's dinner party, where cooks from ancient Greece rub shoulders and talk shop with today's rising stars. These unruly culinarians compliment, compete and disagree with one another as they discuss childhood and training, taste preferences and trends, the quest for perfection and the grueling but exhilarating business of opening a restaurant. The Chef Says will captivate anyone who has ever worked in a kitchen, been inspired by a flawlessly ripe tomato, or resolved a crisis by adding more butter. The first compendium to focus on quotations from chefs themselves, it is the perfect gift for professionals, foodies, home cooks and anyone interested in culinary culture. Features 150 quotes from an international roster of chefs, including Lidia Bastianich, Mario Batali, James Beard, Daniel Boulud, Anthony Bourdain, David Chang, Julia Child, Tom Colicchio, Elizabeth David, Wylie Dufresne, Gabrielle Hamilton, Thomas Keller, Jim Lahey, Sarabeth Levine, Edna Lewis, Anita Lo, Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Samuelsson, Andre Soltner, Charlie Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Alice Waters and many others.

The Musician Says

The fifth title in our popular quotation collection series, this volume gathers words by and about musicians. One quotation per page--the quote on the left and right side of the spread responding in some way to each other. The Musician Says resembles a dinner or cocktail party, with a musician from the nineteenth century chatting with one practicing today, or two contemporary musicians talking to each other--complimenting, competing, disagreeing. This is a collection of bright, intriguing, and provocative quotations from those who have spent a lifetime writing songs and performing them in front of loyal audiences. It's honest, wry, and sometimes very moving. To hear Beethoven and John Lee Hooker "talk" about how they keep track of their musical ideas, so as not to lose them, or Mozart and Steven Tyler complain about ongoing money challenges, reminds us all that the creative process bridges time and place, and music is indeed a universal language.

Never Use Futura

It's everywhere, including the moon (on the commemorative plaque left by Apollo 11 astronauts), Nike sneakers, the artworks of Barbara Kruger, Ed Ruscha, and Jenny Holzer, 2001: A Space Odyssey credits, Domino's Pizza boxes, Absolut Vodka bottles, and Red Bull cans. Futura and its typographic offspring have been the face of presidential campaigns from Richard Nixon to Hillary Clinton. Indeed, Futura is one of the most used fonts in the world today the typeface of modern design more so even than Helvetica. This fascinating book explores the cultural history and uses of a face that's so common you might not notice, until you start looking, and then you can't escape it. Douglas Thomas traces Futura from its Bauhaus-inspired origin in Paul Renner's 1924 design, to its current role as the go-to choice for corporate work, logos, motion pictures, and advertisements. Never Use Futura is illuminating, sometimes playful, reading, not just for type nerds, but for anyone interested in how typefaces are used, take on meaning, and become a language of their own.
