Wie aus dem Nebel taucht plötzlich das übergroße Gesicht Christopher Walkens auf. Ohren und Haare verschwinden bereits im Dunkel des Hintergrunds, aber Haut, Augen, Nase und Mund wirken seltsam klar und scharf. In Walkens Blick spiegeln sich zwei Neonröhren, und auch sonst wirkt das Foto des deutschen Fotografen Martin Schoeller aus dem Bildband Close up merkwürdig unrealistisch. Nicht nur, dass man einem Filmstar selten so nah gekommen ist. Irgendwie scheint das Bild gar kein Foto zu sein, sondern eher ein hyperrealistisches Kunstwerk in der Manier von Chuck Close oder Gottfried Helnwein. Wie die anderen Prominenten, die Schoeller abgelichtet hat -- darunter Milton Friedman (1999), Jack Nicholson (2002) und Angelina Jolie (2004) --, scheint auch Walken diese Befremdung gespürt zu haben. Irgendwie war er bei der Aufnahme offenbar sorgsam darauf bedacht, nicht so viel von sich preiszugeben. Gerade diese distanzierte Nähe macht den eigentümlichen Reiz von Close up aus. „Offenheit und Zerbrechlichkeit“ wolle er zum Ausdruck bringen, hat Schoeller gesagt, dessen Fotografien unter anderem im New Yorker erschienen. Aber eigentlich zeigt er vor allem die Verletzlichkeit des Individuums, die sich hinter einer Maske sorgsam verbirgt. Jahrelang ist er durch US-amerikanische Straßen und die Kulturlandschaft gezogen und hat Alltagsgesichter und Prominente ohne Unterschied mit Neonlicht ausgeleuchtet und fotografiert, immer mit der Kamera auf Augenhöhe, immer frontal, immer mit dem Blick der Porträtierten ins Objektiv. Herausgekommen ist ein großartiger Band, der selbst den bisher als sattsam bekannt erscheinenden Konterfeis der Schönen und Berühmten Hollywoods noch neue, ernstere, menschlichere Züge abgewinnt. Schoeller ist einer der ganz großen der neueren Foto-Szene, und Close up ist ein kleines Meisterwerk. --Thomas Köster
