Postcard Age

In the decades around 1900, postcards were Twitter, e-mail, Flickr and Facebook all wrapped into one. A postcard craze swept the globe, wreaking havoc on international postal systems and giving rise to anecdotes about overburdened postmen who had to leave bags of cards undelivered. Many of these cards were thrown away after they had served their purpose. But not all, as the craze for buying and sending postcards was married to a craze for collecting them. Millions upon millions of postcards were never posted; instead, they were tucked into boxes and albums, unused and in mint condition. Drawing on one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of postcards anywhere, "The Postcard Age" traces how big historical and cultural themes of the modern era played out on the postcards tiny canvas. Taken together, the almost 400 postcards represented in this book provide a vivid picture of the concerns, trends and pastimes of another era as well as a sampler of the artistic and historical riches offered by these messengers of the modern age.

Midnight to the Boom

Following independence in 1947, India's artists faced a particular challenge: how to express the new nations distinctive character while entering a global discourse focused on modernisms universal premises of experimentation and shared human values. In the absence of a dominant aesthetic, painters could turn where they wished and blend as they liked from Abstract Expressionism to Tantric spiritualism; from Rajasthani painting to changes in India's complex politics, religions, castes and daily life. This richly illustrated, in-depth study, published to accompany the exhibition organized by the Peabody Essex Museum in the USA, surveys the three generations of artists responsible for these critical shifts in the development of India's modernist art. It shows how their achievements and the countries unprecedented boom ushered India's modern and contemporary art into a new era of globalism, a soaring international market, and an explosion in the media and technologies of art.

Medieval Modern Art Out of Time

This groundbreaking study explores the deep connections between modern and premodern art, offering a radical reading that reveals the underlying patterns and ideas traversing centuries of artistic practice. Nagel reconsiders from an innovative double perspective some key issues in the history of art, from iconoclasm and illusionism to the status of painting, installation, and the museum as institution. He examines, among other topics, why the medieval workshop was of such importance to the Bauhaus; how the 4th-century Jerusalem Chapel in Rome was a proto-earthwork akin to the projects of Robert Smithson; and the relationship between medieval relics and Duchamps readymades. Alongside an analysis of 20th-century medievalist theorists such as Brecht, Joyce and Eco, Nagel considers a wide range of celebrated artists. This is a radical new reading of art that will profoundly broaden our understanding of both premodern practices and the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
