10 Principles of Architecture
The rules of architecture have been discussed since the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius coined the trilogy 'firmitas, utilitas and venustas', most commonly translated as firmness, commodity and delight. Put simply, this means that a building should stand up and endure, that it should serve its function, and that it should give pleasure to its users and the wider community. Great buildings, like great art, contain something that is impossible to define or pin down. But that greatness, in almost all cases, overlays the principles set out in this book. While one cannot guarantee that a building will be great, if all the principles are followed, you will avoid the pitfalls to which too many are subject. This new title in Vivays Publishing's '10 Principles' series provides clear explanations of each tenet along with useful illustrations to help the reader visualise what is being discussed. The author assumes no background on the subject, but an interest in learning more about what goes into making a building work. An experienced writer on this subject, Ruth Slavid provides a useful and illuminating primer to the field that is accessible to students of architecture, architects or architectural historians or anyone interested in the principles behind the buildings that surround them.
10 Principles of Good Advertising
The popularity of the television series 'Mad Men' has raised the public awareness of advertising firms and what may or may not happen behind the scenes. We all recognise advertising when we see it: it's those bits that surround the editorial content in papers and magazines, that interrupt TV programmes or pop up on the websites you like to browse. As a discipline it might be defined as follows: advertising is about creating a message about something (usually a product or service) and then getting it out to people in the hope that they will react in a particular way - which in all likelihood means "buying it". Or put another way, it's paid persuasive communication that uses the mass media to connect an identified sponsor - the person or company that pays for the ad - with its target audience. This book examines the different elements of those definitions and shows readers - through discussion of the ten key principles underlying all great advertising - how to create dynamic, well-targeted adverts of their own. Engagingly written by journalist and critic Robert Shore, this book provides the basic principles behind creating a successful advertisement. With clear explanations, illustrations and checklists for each chapter, the reader is guided through what goes into making an advertisement work.
Toulouse-Lautrec and His World
The Belle Epoque (Beautiful Era), which dates from the late nineteenth century to the start of World War I, was an incredible period of creative and scientific activity. Until his death in 1901 at the age of 36, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was one of its leading names along with poets and writers such as Guy de Maupassant and Emile Zola. He exhibited with Vincent Van Gogh and was a friend of Oscar Wilde whom he met during his time in London. Creating literally thousands of artworks during his short life, the images that Toulouse-Lautrec created were evocative of the mood of that time. His drawings and lithographs were often playful or satirical, but captured the essence of his subject This book brings together over 170 images. In addition, there are documentary images from the period depicting life in 'fin de siecle' Paris and selected cities around the world. Clothing, architecture and images of street life are featured and where possible photographs of the people Toulouse-Lautrec featured in his works such as Aristide Bruant.

Contemporary Fashion Stylists
Behind most Hollywood stars there is a fashion stylist's guiding hand making sure that everyone will gasp with admiration - and not horror - at the actress's outfit when she makes her walk along the red carpet. From the more traditional stylists to the more outrageous ones, the book covers a wide range of styles and media from styling for magazine shoots as well as for film and video. This book will appeal to fashion and media students, fashion journalists, stylists, magazine editors and people who are interested in a behind the scenes look at styling.
