"The Teacher from Mars" became an instant classic when it was published in the February 1941 issue of the classic pulp magazine, Thrilling Wonder Stories. It concerns a Martian who comes to Earth as a teacher, experiencing—in the wake of a devastating war—racism and intolerance. Told from the first person viewpoint of an alien, it was unusual for its time, and Eando Binder (the pseudonym of Otto O. Binder) selected it as his best work for the 1954 anthology, My Best Scieince Fiction Story.

"Fifth Freedom" is a classic science fiction story originally published in John W. Campbell's Astounding Science-Fiction, May 1943 issue.

This startlingly beautiful and exotic story has to do with one of the most wondrous and frightening things in the world: growing up. Such simple words for such a complex, weighty, never-ending process. It carries with it the realization of responsibilities, the maddening loss of one kind of security and the sometimes-reluctant gain of another, and so much isolation. “New Olympus” is undoubtedly about a good deal more than the loss of one’s childhood. Cross’s stories, his visions of life, are as complex as the finest poetry and similarly leave the reader with singular, recognizable, yet hard-to-define feelings. This one left us feeling awash in admiration.

“Tanner,” he called. “Hurry up, down there,” yelled the navigator. “Let’s get on our way.” “Tanner. Come down here.” Some thing in Manders’ voice brought immediate action. Tanner came scrambling down the tube, his face serious. “What is it?” “Look!” Tanner followed the other’s gaze, touched the thin stream of sticky stuff, held his hand closer to his eyes. “Blood!” he breathed. “By all that’s holy. Blood!”

And yet we are given to understand that Cross is an upright, reasonable sort, who, judging from the stories that have appeared under his name, turns onto writing the way a flower child turns onto psychedelics. For that matter few writers would dare commit a story like this to paper—who but Cross would have guessed that the adventures of a star-crossed lizard would make such exciting reading? Sometimes the best fiction is inexplicable. We think you’ll find “The Adventures of Lance the Lizard” inexplicably joyful. —And that is a recommendation we seldom make."

Jennie must surely regret her impersonation of the Princess von Steinheimer at the Duchess of Chiselhurst’s Ball. Detectives know it wasn't the real Princess and are pressing her for more information. And, in the meantime, she received a letter from her Highness: "My dear Jennie,” her Highness wrote, “I am sure the detectives are after you, and so I thought it best to send you a word of warning. Of course it is only surmise on my part, but for days there has been a woman hovering about the castle, trying to get information from my servants. My maid came directly to me and told me what she knew. The woman detective had spoken to her. This inquisitive person, who had come from Paris, wished particularly to know whether I had been seen about the castle during the week in which the Duchess of Chiselhurst’s ball took place; and so this leads me to suppose that some one is making inquiries for you. It must be either Lord Donal Stirling or the Duke of Chiselhurst, but I rather think it is the former. I have written an indignant letter to Lord Donal, accusing him of having caused detectives to haunt the castle. I have not yet received a reply, but Lord Donal is a truthful person, and in a day or two I expect to find out whether or not he has a hand in this business. Meanwhile, Jennie, be on your guard, and I will write you again as soon as I have something further to tell.” Ominous developments, indeed! And how does the Prime Minister fit into all this?
