Byzantine Historical Writing
In this collection of essays, James Howard-Johnston evaluates historical sources from across the entire existence of the Byzantine empire. Byzantium was peculiarly well endowed for the writing of history, given a relatively high degree of literacy, a large governing class running a centralised state and its associated church, and its inheritance of the historical habit developed independently in classical Greece and Judaea. Historical coverage is complete save for one short period, the reign of Constans II (641–9). Unsurprisingly, in what was a thoroughly bureaucratic state, officials and ex-officials of state and church predominate among historians. The histories they wrote were of two principal sorts: compendia which might reach back to the beginning of time, succinct, concerned primarily with chronology, and written in relatively plain language; and contemporary histories presenting fuller narratives, more interested in causes and effects, and generally written in a higher style, with classical touches. They used the bureaucratic vernacular, were primarily concerned with high politics and foreign affairs, and calibrated time by financial years. Particular emphasis is put on their use of documentary sources, the surest and safest conveyors of detailed information from the past to the historian. A small number of individual historians are singled out for closer scrutiny, because of the importance or unusual character of their works. Procopius is portrayed as an experienced military architect/engineer and born storyteller rather than a highly educated lawyer. Theophanes deserves a special place, because of the scale of the work which he wrote with his mentor George Synkellos. George, it turns out, wrote the last contemporary section of their world history. Constantine Porphyrogenitus (905–59) was responsible for a historically enriched guide to diplomacy, but most of the valuable information which it contains about the early medieval history of the Balkans, Ukrainian steppes, and Transcaucasia is attributable to his father, Leo VI. The Logothete's world chronicle is singled out because of its vitriolic attack on the first three Macedonian emperors. Finally, Anna Komnene demands attention as the first known female historian. Her Alexias, probably the finest history produced in Byzantium, is shown to contain a great deal of material drafted by her husband, Nikephoros Bryennios. This contentious view is canvassed in the last three essays.

Socrates has been hiding in plain sight. We call him the father of Western philosophy, but what exactly are his philosophical views? He is famous for his humility, but readers often find him arrogant and condescending. We parrot his claim that 'the unexamined life is not worth living,' yet take no steps to live examined ones. We know that he was tried, convicted, and executed for 'corrupting the youth,' but freely assign Socratic dialogues to today's youths, to introduce them to philosophy. We've lost sight of what made him so dangerous. In Open Socrates, acclaimed philosopher Agnes Callard recovers the radical energy at the centre of Socrates' thought and shows why it is still the way to a good life.
Callard draws our attention to Socrates' startling discovery that we don't know how to ask ourselves the most important questions- about how we should live, and how we might change. Before a person even has a chance to reflect, their bodily desires or the forces of social conformity have already answered on their behalf. To ask the most important questions, we need help. Callard argues that the true ambition of the famous "Socratic method" is to reveal what one human being can be to another. You can use another person in many ways-for survival, for pleasure, for comfort- but you are engaging them to the fullest when you call on them to help answer your questions and challenge your answers.
Here Callard shows that Socrates' method allows us to make progress in thinking about how to manage romantic love, how to confront one's own death, and how to approach politics. In the process, she gives us nothing less than a new ethics to live by.

Kniha navazuje na dlouhodobou práci Libora Duška – badatele a autora, který umí dějiny vyprávět tak, aby nezůstaly jen v archivech. Jeho síla je v umění ptát se, naslouchat a zpracovat vzpomínky zpovídaného pamětníka. Zároveň nejde o pouhé vzpomínání. Jeho profesní svět se opírá o poctivou práci s prameny, místem a kontextem.
Stíny Kasejovicka 1
Kasejovice jsou malé město ležící na pomezí jižních a západních Čech. Jeho historická zákoutí ukrývají celou řadu zajímavých a zapomenutých příběhů. Kniha Stíny Kasejovicka na ně nahlíží především optikou místních mužů zákona. Smrt parašutisty Bohuslava Kouby
Rotný Bohuslav Kouba byl velitelem výsadku BIOSCOP vysazeného po půlnoci na úterý 28. dubna 1942 nedaleko od osady Požáry na Křivoklátsku. Krátce po seskoku se výsadek rozdělil a oba podřízení, četař aspirant Josef Bublík a četař Jan Hrubý následně zahynuli hrdinskou smrtí v pravoslavném chrámu svatého Cyrila a Metoděje v Resslově ulici v Praze spolu s dalšími pěti parašutisty. Rotný Kouba se odebral za účelem navázání kontaktu s odbojáři na četnickou stanici Kutná Hora. Zde jej však před jeho příchodem hledalo gestapo. Poté, co se dostal do bezvýchodné situace, aby nevyzradil své spolupracovníky a neohrozil patnáct přítomných četníků a jejich rodiny, ukončil svůj život požitím letální tablety.
