Stát Izrael se v současnosti dostal do středu pozornosti celého světa. Je důležité porozumět jeho vnitřní členitosti a nevidět ho jako jednolité společenství. Tomu může napomoci kniha vzpomínek českého estetika Tomáše Kulky, pokrývající období od roku 1972 do roku 2000. Děj je rozdělen do sedmi částí, chronologicky mapujících klíčové historické události Izraele. Kulka přijíždí v roce 1972 do Izraele z Anglie, kam odešel z Československa v roce 1968. Kniha zachycuje války a politické zvraty – prožitek Jomkipurské války v roce 1973, kdy je Izrael nečekaně napaden Egyptem a Sýrií. Zvrat v roce 1977, kdy pravice vítězí ve volbách. Libanonskou válku v letech 1981-1982. Pozornost je věnována válce v Zálivu v roce 1991. Kniha se zabývá dynamikou izraelské společnosti, zejména rozdíly mezi Aškenázy a Sefardy. Zdůrazněn je rostoucí vliv náboženského fundamentalismu. Zobrazen je též izraelsko-palestinský konflikt a Jeruzalém. V závěru knihy je popsán krach mírových jednání v Camp Davidu a eskalace násilí v důsledku sporu o svrchovanost Jeruzaléma a Chrámové hory. Důležitou součástí knihy je popis traumatu z atentátu na Jicchaka Rabina v roce 1995. Vše je prokládáno zasvěceným rozborem místní kultury, náboženských pravidel a politických zvyklostí.

Engem kedvelő táblácskáit hálásan köszönöm, nagyon jó vasárnap estét szerzett velük, kérem, vissza ne vonja őket. És mint láthatja, a reményt még nem adtam fel, itt vagyok. Egyébként az "úrinő" fogalom diagnosztikus értelemben teljesen bizonytalan kategória, én például a legutóbbi időkig azt a meghatározást vettem figyelembe, hogy úrinő nem fut, és ehhez képest "úriember nem tunkol.”
