Děj je rozdělen do sedmi částí, chronologicky mapujících klíčové historické události Izraele. Kulka přijíždí v roce 1972 do Izraele z Anglie, kam odešel z Československa v roce 1968. Kniha zachycuje války a politické zvraty – prožitek Jomkipurské války v roce 1973, kdy je Izrael nečekaně napaden Egyptem a Sýrií. Zvrat v roce 1977, kdy pravice vítězí ve volbách. Libanonskou válku v letech 1981-1982. Pozornost je věnována válce v Zálivu v roce 1991. Kniha se zabývá dynamikou izraelské společnosti, zejména rozdíly mezi Aškenázy a Sefardy. Zdůrazněn je rostoucí vliv náboženského fundamentalismu. Zobrazen je též izraelsko-palestinský konflikt a Jeruzalém.
