Children of the Third Reich
The Third Reich cast a long shadow, not least over those born in Germany at that time. Whether the children of Nazi perpetrators or Holocaust survivors, they all had to come to terms with their dark past, based on an inhuman racial ideology. Renate was born in 1941, the daughter of an unknown SS General and Nazi war criminal who fathered her as part of his racial duty to produce 'A Child for Hitler.' Joe was born in 1946 in a Displaced Persons camp for Holocaust survivors. Dan was born in Haifa in 1938 to German Jewish immigrant parents. Then it was Palestine, later Israel, and Dan was a proud Israeli, until he wasn't so sure any more. All three grew up surrounded by silence and secrets, because their parents wanted to protect them from the horrors of the dark Nazi past which had devastated their lives. Decades later the three met, each trying to come to terms with their legacies of silence, secrets and pain. In Children of the Third Reich, acclaimed historian Catrine Clay traces their stories from Germany to the United States and Israel, confronting their dark pasts in order to find ways to a better future.
A Concise History of Spain
Modern Spain has developed from a complex history, a diverse population, and continual contact with outside influences. This updated and revised volume moves from prehistoric times to the present, incorporating recent scholarship and focusing on politics, society, economy, culture, and personalities. Written in an engaging style, it introduces key themes that have shaped Spanish history. These include its varied landscapes and climate zones; the impact of waves of human migrations; and Spain's importance as a bridge between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, between Europe and Africa, and between Europe and Latin America. Another key theme is religion, particularly militant Catholic Christianity, its centuries of conflict with Islam and Protestantism, and debates over the place of religion in modern Spanish life. Illustrations, maps, and a guide to further information about major cultural figures, books to read, and places of interest make the history of this fascinating country come alive.

Entryways of Milan. Ingressi di Milano. 45th Ed.
First impressions count, especially in Milano. In this unprecedented photographic journey, editor Karl Kolbitz opens the door to 144 of the city's most sumptuous entrance halls, captivating in their diversity and splendor. These vibrant Milanese entryways, until now hidden away behind often restrained façades, are revealed as dazzling examples of Italian modernism, mediating public and private space with vivid configurations of color and form, from floors of juxtaposed stones to murals of minimalist geometry.
The collection spans buildings from 1920 to 1970 and showcases the work of some of the city's most illustrious architects and designers, including Giovanni Muzio, Gio Ponti, Piero Portaluppi, and Luigi Caccia Dominioni, as well as non-pedigreed architecture of equal impact and interest. The photographs for the publication were exclusively shot by Delfino Sisto Legnani, Paola Pansini, and Matthew Billings, each evoking the entryways with individual sensibility and a stylistic interplay of detail shots-such as stones, door handles, and handrails-with larger architectural views.
The images are accompanied by concise contributions from Penny Sparke, Fabrizio Ballabio, Lisa Hockemeyer, Daniel Sherer, Brian Kish, and Grazia Signori, together bringing a wealth of architecture, design, and natural stone expertise to guide the reader through the applied materials and fittings as well as the art-historical and social implications of each of the ingressi. As much an architectural city guide as an aesthetic study, the book provides the exact address and an annotated Milan map for all featured entryways, as well as the architect name and date of construction.
In the well-documented realm of 20th-century Italian design, Kolbitz has stepped over the threshold and delivered a brand new area of inquiry in Milanese modernism. With the rigor of its multifaceted research, poised photography, and breadth of its featured hallways, this is an invigorating new reference work and an inside look at the city's design DNA across high to low architecture.
Babylon, Albion
Whoever said nature is still has not borne witness to the migration of the seasons. In this lyrical enquiry, Dalia Al-Dujaili considers what it means to belong in your land. She traces the rich heritage of the earth beneath our feet and the wildlife that call it home – from the oak tree and date palm to fairytale creatures, such as dragons, unicorns and the ancient Lamassu. Weaving together Arab and Islamic mythology with the English and Christian pastoral, Al-Dujaili unmasks the communal lush, familiar and, at times, dark places we share.A love song to Britain, Iraq and the body of earth we hold in common, Babylon, Albion is a compelling re-imagining of what it means to be native.
Tree of Knowledge
A poet watches the limbs of a eucalyptus tree get sawed off: the image persists, recurring across poems of art, language, selfhood, memory, and lossJoan Mitchell said, When I talk about love, I mean loving a tree. When I talk about love, I mean loving where a tree used to be.Men assess the eucalyptus tree growing on the poet''s street; a crane arrives. The sound of a chainsaw rings in the air and branches begin to fall. This tree-cutting haunts the poet, and refracts across the remarkable work collected in Tree of Knowledge as Chang turns her thoughts to artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Mitchell and Hilma af Klint.Roving, evocative, and intricate, Tree of Knowledge is rooted in Victoria Chang''s crystalline voice and generous, probing gaze, and by certain images ? trees, a hanging figure, a branch, fingertips, a briefcase ? that resurface like apparitions.

Moje Antonie
Moje Antonie patří k nejvýznamnějším dílům americké literatury a představuje vrchol autorčiny tvorby.
T. G. Masaryk

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER'AMAZING.' NANA AKUA, GB NEWS'A perfect combination of candid personal insight and scientific research, this highly readable guide covers it all, from cigarettes to jumping jacks...' Dr Flaminia Ronca When journalist Sandra Parsons suffered a serious back injury in her mid-40s, she knew things had to change. Years of smoking, drinking and late-night takeaways at her desk had taken their toll; she was in pain, and she felt... well, old. In her quest to heal her body, Sandra delved into the science of ageing and was astonished by what she found - that ageing is now considered a treatable 'disease', and by addressing its root causes, we can turn back the clock and dramatically improve our health. Distilling all the latest medical science and with the help of the world's leading longevity experts, she presents a 3-step plan to embed new ways of eating, moving and, crucially, resting more deeply. The plan is designed to put you on the path to long-term change, but you will feel the effects in a matter of weeks. With quizzes at each step to assess your health and clever food swaps, this book introduces key changes to your daily routine that will repair years of damage and transform the way you feel. Now 61, Sandra discovered in a recent test that she has a biological age of 20. That's right - 61 on the outside, 20 on the inside. This book shows how she did it - and how you can too.
