Beyond Monotheism
Argues that nature in all of its aspects is its own creative, sustaining, sacred, salvific ground—and is the most appropriate focus today of ardent religious faith. In Beyond Monotheism, Donald A. Crosby carefully and respectfully examines the experiential, rational, moral, religious, philosophical, and scientific reasons alleged by philosophers, theologians, scientists, and others for believing in the existence of a single personal God. He concludes that these reasons, while fascinating and historically important, are neither universally compelling nor, for him, personally convincing. Nor is monotheism an essential feature of all vital religious faith, as the fact of long-lasting, deeply nourishing forms of non-monotheistic faith such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Daoism convincingly show. Crosby contends, instead, that nature itself in all its grandeur, mystery, and profound workings is inherently sacred and richly deserving of the reverence, faith, and commitment formerly reserved for God—if we have the wit, determination, imagination, and receptivity of heart and mind to search for and find them there. Nature, Crosby argues, is its own basis or ground—and nature, properly understood and revered, is through and through sacred ground and, as such, an appropriate focus of profoundly evocative, hopeful, meaningful, and sustaining religious faith. In the midst of global climate change, widespread species extinctions and endangerments, and fast-approaching earth-wide ecological disaster, Beyond Monotheism calls attention to another religious way of life, one of singular relevance and importance for our time.

Waters of Life
'From the moment that these waters were given back their beavers, I knew that I would never wish to return to the time when they were without them . . .'In November 2021, in a major moment in Scotland’s history, a family of beavers was spared a death sentence and relocated to a Perthshire farm. Their arrival at Argaty, Tom Bowser's home, paved the way for a new era in human–beaver relations. In this deeply personal account, Tom tells of his attempts to save these incredible animals, of the support and opposition received and of the unimaginable gains that beavers ultimately brought to his home. He also explores the wider themes of rewilding and nature conservation in Scotland, meeting some of the leading lights of this exciting movement, highlighting the work they do, the challenges they face and showing why ecological restoration is so important for the future of our planet.
Dressing the Queen
'A truly wonderful and fascinating book!' Lady Anne GlenconnerThe hidden story of the people who designed, sewed, stitched and steamed the clothes of Britain's queens, from Victoria to the present day. From tours and walkabouts to the dazzling spectacle of a wedding or Coronation, the clothes worn by royal women have always been a fascination. Starting with Queen Victoria and moving to the modern Elizabethan age, DRESSING THE QUEEN shows the incredible craftmanship and painstaking effort that go into the making of what is known as the ‘Royal Wardrobe’, from handmade boots to Crown Jewels; country tweeds to delicate stockings. Dress historian Kate Strasdin reveals a tribe of previously unsung women and men. Some may be more renowned – such as designer Norman Hartnell or suitcase-maker Louis Vuitton – but most are ordinary, highly talented working people from across the British Isles. From rural straw plaiters to wartime coat-makers and refugee glovers, their skilled labour is a vital part of our country’s history. As we see modern princesses sally forth in fantastically arranged ensembles, we can think again of the vanishing trades that once employed millions – and still remain integral to royal life today. ‘A fascinating glimpse into the lives of the makers behind all the glitter of royalty’ Daisy Goodwin'A must for fans of royal and fashion history’ Tracy Borman

The Bookseller of Hay
This book seeks to discover the real Richard Booth, who is seen in a remarkable number of guises by friend and foe. Most striking is how opinions of Booth contradict one another. Former girlfriends call the thrice-married Booth a deeply sensitive, thwarted romantic, while former colleagues howl with laughter at the suggestion, calling him a promiscuous, sex-mad monster. Was he an out-of-control boozer or an outgoing and generous charmer? Was he ultra-competitive in the company of others, or a generous-spirited patron of the arts who wanted above all to encourage the talents of others? The chronicle of how Hay became famous has never been written. Recent books on the place have been guide books, rather than portraits of Hay''s idiosyncrasies. Nor has anyone catalogued the day-to-day folly of the early Booth years, a true Alice in Wonderland adventure of excess and financial incontinence. Booth''s autobiography, largely penned for him by his step-daughter, is a readable but highly partial version of events.

Fotograf Milan Šustr a historik Stanislav Mikule odhalují čtenářům tajuplnou symboliku čísel, jedinečné symetrie tvarů a hry světla a tmy.
