The Night is Not For You

'A book I will return to time and time again' MEGAN BONTRAGER 'Perfectly captures the dark heart of girlhood' JEN JULIAN '[A] wonderfully chilling and entirely immersive feminist horror story' Publishers WeeklyShe's a cautionary tale told by mothers to their young children, 'Come back before it gets dark.'She's a warning to lecherous young men, 'Don't wander the streets late at night.' A man's body is found viciously murdered behind a neighbourhood's 24-hour corner store, sending shockwaves through the small, tightknit community. All anyone wants is to make sense of this brutal crime and move on with their lives. But all seven-year-old Layla wants is a pet donkey. To her, a donkey is the epitome of freedom and being self-sufficient - to think for herself, go anywhere by herself and live an independent life. The killings continue and rumours start to fly of supposed hoofprints and a woman with hair like black silk. As the ambiguous messages in lipstick and sweet smell of perfume at the crime scenes causes the men to suspect the women around them, Layla's world unravels. She grows into the type of woman she has always dreamed of becoming. A woman with sharp instincts. A woman who cannot be tamed.

Stone Lands

'Superb' Telegraph'There's a real sense of peace and magic in this beautiful book' Daisy Buchanan'Utterly endearing' Dr James Canton'A fantastic book for weird walkers and megalith-obsessives alike' Weird Walk 'I was alternately gripped and moved to tears by this brilliant, exquisite memoir. . . I can't recommend it enough' Harriet EvansJourneying across Britain, from West Penwith and Avebury to the Lake District and Orkney, Stone Lands uncovers the magic and rich history of our incredible prehistoric standing stones. It conveys the delight that lies in tracking them down, as well as the solace these ancient places offer in times of darkness. A few months after discovering that her beloved husband, Stephen, had incurable cancer, Fiona Robertson began to write this book. A long-time megalith enthusiast, she found the ancient stones resonated with her more profoundly than ever as she faced the prospect of losing him. Set upright thousands of years ago, the megaliths are symbols of endurance and survival, standing in contrast to our ephemeral human lives. Infused with folklore, legend and mystery, they enchant the landscape and bring magic to our modern world. This enthralling memoir is woven delicately around great grief but is ultimately about embracing life, joy and ancient wonder - a luminous reminder of what it means to exist on this earth. Stone Lands is beautifully illustrated inside with stunning black and white line drawings by the illustrator and printmaker Philip Harris. Generalship on the Eastern Front, 1941–45

A comprehensive evaluation of generalship on the most important front in World War II. The war on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 was the largest sustained air-ground conflict in military history and played the decisive role in the defeat of the Third Reich. This new study seeks to analyse the command and generalship of the combatants. The scale of the conflict was immense. Lasting over 46 months it involved over 10 million combatants at its peak, and resulted in roughly 15 million military deaths, as well as about 20 million civilian deaths. More than 50 percent of all German military fatalities in 1941–45 occurred there, and by the time the Western Allies invaded France in June 1944, the Wehrmacht was already decimated. Who were the generals who led these campaigns on the Eastern Front? The standard historiography of World War II tends to focus on a few prominent leaders while ignoring the mass of commanders and operational-level military staffs who actually fought most of the war and this new study by renowned Eastern Front historian Robert Forczyk seeks to redress the balance. Generalship on the Eastern Front offers an objective analytic framework for assessing the senior German and Soviet commanders on the Eastern Front through the lens of generalship and battle command, examining a total of 54 German and 140 Soviet officers.

Empire Without End

A powerful and important reckoning with Britain's imperial legacy and contemporary systemic racism'A richly told history of Empire from which we cannot turn away' AFUA HIRSCH'I’d have loved to have read such a book when I was a schoolboy' COLIN GRANTFrom the 1500s to the mid-twentieth century, the events that took place in the Caribbean – from conquest, colonisation and capitalism to racial slavery, revolution and migration – and the people who forged them played a seminal role in creating modern Britain and the Anglophone Caribbean. By the 1960s, Western global empires had begun to crumble. Yet the British Empire in the Caribbean did not end. Instead, colonialism was replaced with a new type of power whose impact can still be felt: neo-colonialism. Empire Without End offers a new interpretation of the British Empire, its enduring entanglement with the Anglophone Caribbean and the longevity of systemic racism. Taking a longer historical perspective starting in the period of European contact with the Caribbean and ending today, Imaobong Umoren looks at the impact and legacies of racial slavery to explore how later linked histories relating to capitalism, class, labour, war, political economy, poverty, gender and culture are crucial to telling the full story. In doing so, she sets out a compelling strategy to define our roles and responsibilities in challenging the legacy of colonialism and hierarchy – a legacy that continues to blight our society and our politics.

YO! MAN

From rock’n’roll roadie to conveyor belt sushi empire – the unlikely story of the man who built YO!In 1997, Simon Woodroffe opened YO! Sushi with L200,000 and a 100-metre conveyor belt. For two weeks, nobody came. By week three, there was a queue around the block that lasted three years. But Simon’s journey to that moment was anything but conventional. A former roadie and stage designer who worked on Live Aid and built sets for rock legends, he’d been expelled from school, arrested for drugs at nineteen, and served time in a young offender’s prison. By his early forties, after business failures and divorce, he was nearly broke and wondering if he’d ever amount to anything. Then came fire-walking. Lunch with a Japanese businessman. A crazy idea. And the decision to risk everything at forty-five. This is the brutally honest, wildly entertaining story of how Simon created not just one but multiple iconic brands: YO! Sushi, YOTEL and the YO! empire itself. From the Creative Britannia moment of the late 90s to bankruptcy scares, difficult partnerships and becoming an original Dragon on BBC’s Dragon’s Den, Simon holds nothing back about the sleepless nights, mental health struggles, relationship disasters and moments of pure terror when everything hung by a thread. Whether you’re forty-five and wondering if it’s too late, or nineteen and wondering if it’s possible, YO! MAN proves that the most unlikely journeys often lead to the most extraordinary destinations.

Breaking the New Axis

Blending history, strategy, and policy, this analysis presents a comprehensive U.S. approach to countering the coordinated threat posed by China, Russia, and Iran. It outlines how America can exploit their shared weaknesses and secure strategic dominance across Eurasia through military preparedness, alliance-building, and coherent grand strategy. This innovative work fundamentally redefines how the United States should approach grand strategy when confronting the “New Axis” of China, Russia, and Iran by revealing their critical weaknesses—internal pressures, lack of cohesive coordination, and short-term thinking—and presenting a unique opportunity for America to turn the tide. Authors Seth Cropsey and Harry Halem meticulously explain why Eurasia, the world’s largest landmass and historically the epicenter of power, remains strategically paramount. Structured into four compelling sections, Breaking the New Axis guides readers through the intricacies of geopolitics, strategy, and large-scale combat: exploring Eurasian strategic thought, dissecting threats from revisionist powers, examining defense technology's role, and demanding U.S. strategic coherence. The book offers actionable solutions, with a detailed roadmap for preparing the United States to deter and, if necessary, win a Eurasian-wide war: revitalizing the defense industrial base, reorganizing command-and-control for combat, leveraging strategic intelligence, and strengthening alliances across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Engaging, deeply insightful, and unequivocally urgent, Breaking the New Axis is an indispensable read for policymakers, strategists, and anyone invested in global stability.

A Golden World

'A wonderfully stylish, gloriously technicolour book' - NANDINI DAS'An absolute joy to read' - DR STEPHANIE PRATT'Rich, original, and eye-opening' - ALICE HUNT'A sparkling cabinet of curiosities' - CAROLINE DODDS PENNOCKFrom rumours of lost Amazonian cities of gold to the silver running through the mountains of Bolivia, hopes for dazzling wealth fuelled the imperial fantasies of the Tudors and Stuarts. But while stories of treasure ships and privateers like Walter Raleigh have become entrenched in national myths - what did Elizabethans actually know about Mexico, the Amazon rainforest, or the Chesapeake? How did Indigenous people and knowledge enter the art, fashion, and literature of Shakespeare's time - and at what cos? Golden World illuminates how the Americas became a visible and material presence in English culture, through a range of unexpected objects: from tobacco leaves strewn in playhouses to a boy wearing a pearl earring. Award-winning historian Lauren Working presents an altogether new history of the 'golden age' of 16th century England, that considers the desire for power, land and resources in the first era of colonization, alongside the craft and labour of those in the Americas who contributed to the English Renaissance as we know it.
