Ačkoli Arnold rozvíjel ty myšlenkové postupy, které se již ustavily v jeho spisech o vzdělání, o roli kritiky a o studiu keltské literatury, eseje Kultury a anarchie se vyznačují rovněž počátkem něčeho nového. Zahájily řadu jeho zkoumání z šedesátých a sedmdesátých let 19. století o vzájemném vztahu náboženství a kultury a o vztahu mezi individuálním a sociálním záměrem v tomto kontextu. Po Kultuře a anarchii následovaly knihy St. Paul and Protestantism a Literature and Dogma. Mnohé z těch otázek, které si Arnold kladl v těchto třech důležitých dílech, nacházely trvalý ohlas u kritiků, kteří byli konfrontování s analogickým napětím mezi pluralismem a integrací. Diskuse o náboženských cílech byla v 19. století pro morální definici společnosti a státu zásadní, což už pro počátek století 20. přestalo platit. Přesto se však v posledním desetiletí náboženství vrátilo zpět po politické i kulturní agendy jak v globálním, tak v národním kontextu.
