Elijáš Baley je detektivem na Zemi. Když dostane příkaz vyšetřovat vraždu Vesmířana, spolupracovat přitom s jiným Vesmířanem a ještě k tomu s robotem, jehož pouhá přítomnost ve městě vyvolává davovou hysterii, má pocit, jakoby se celý svět zbláznil. Děj Ocelových jeskyní se odehrává v několik tisíc let vzdálené budoucnosti. Země je spoutána naprosto uzavřenými a xenofobními gigantickými městy. Žádný Pozemšťan by Venku nestrávil dobrovolně ani minutu. Pozemšťané nenávidí roboty a jejich nenávist stále sílí. Dlouhověcí a všech nemocí zbavení vesmířané, obyvatelé padesátky Vnějších světů, které byly osídleny v dávné minulosti, jsou naopak na roboty zcela odkázáni a z pozice vítězů nutí pozemšťany podřizovat se jejich podmínkám. Z hlediska celkové linie Asimovova světa Nadace je tento příběh prvním krokem v procesu, na jehož konci povstane Galaktické Impérium. Zde se začínají objevovat první známky počínajícího úpadku Vesmířanů. Elijáš Baley je proti své vůli ovlivněn Fastolfovými slovy, že další expanze lidstva je nezbytná. Začíná přehodnocovat své názory na nevyhnutelnost života na Zemi v jejích Ocelových jeskyních. Jde samozřejmě pouze o nepatrné úpravy náhledu na svět. Ovšem i malé kamínky dokážou strhnout lavinu.

Asimov v této sbírce povídek přibližuje historii soužití lidí a robotů. Povídky začínají krátce po vynálezu pozitronického mozku líčí jak se lidé vyrovnávali s existencí umělých výtvorů jim tak podobných kteří vzhledem ke Třem zákonům nejsou schopni se bránit útokům až po pochopení že roboti můžou lidem účinně pomáhat a být i jejich rovnocennými partnery. 9 Trifid
