V dobách, kdy ženy bývaly křehké květinky a mladé dívky často interesantně omdlévaly, vytvořila Jane Austenová ve své Emmě hrdinku z jiného kadlubu. Když v útlém mládí ztratí matku a na otce, slabošského hypochondra, nelze spoléhat, ujme se správy věcí na rodném panství sama a nároky, které na ni nelehká situace klade, vypěstují v bystré dívce vlastnosti suverénního generála.
