A világ itt két részre oszlik: azokra, akik osztályoznak, és azokra, akik az érdemjegyeket kapják. Valahonnan a távolból felsejlik osztályharc, kormányzás, háború és béke, a világ határa azonban itt mindig az egyetemi épületek és a környező város határvonala. Azonos a színhely - egy képzeletbeli angol egyetem -, és azonosak a szereplők - tanárok, diákok, professzorok -; Bradbury azonban tovább lép: új regényében vérbeli szatíraíróként mutatkozik be. A szatíra célpontja egy nehezen körülírható, de könnyen érzékelhető politikai divat: a hatvanas évek vége felé és a hetvenes évek elején eluralkodott, "újbalos" radikalizmus. Szétpukkasztja Kirk illúzióját, aki azt képzeli magáról, hogy radikális handabandázásával ő a történelem alakítója - holott ő is csak "az ész cselének" áldozata, azaz nem alanya, hanem csupán tárgya, pontosabban hordaléka a történelemnek.
