Papež Jan Pavel II. ve svém listu Ordinatio sacerdotalis uvedl: „… prohlašuji, že církev nemá pravomoc udělovat kněžské svěcení ženám a že toto rozhodnutí mají všichni věřící v církvi přijímat jako definitivní.“ Tímto prohlášením byla otázka kněžského svěcení žen v katolické církvi de facto uzavřena.
