Kniha Mýty Západu původně vyšla v roce 1964 jako třetí svazek monumentální čtyřdílné série Masky bohů a stejně jako nová vydání předchozích dílů, Primitivní mytologie a Orientální mytologie, i tato kniha začleňuje aktuální poznatky z archeologie, antropologie a psychologie. V tomto svazku autor sleduje mytologické základy západních náboženství a proměnu, k níž došlo při přechodu od mytologií zaměřených na ženský princip k patriarchálním náboženským systémům. Ukazuje, jak kdysi ústřední postavení plodné bohyně Země – matky a dárkyně života – postupně nahradily kulty mužských božstev spojených s mocí, válkou a zákonem.
