Není obecně známo, že italský malíř Giorgio De Chirico (1888?1978) je autorem několika próz a řady esejí a programových studií, které se úzce vážou k jeho výtvarnému dílu. V roce 1929 vyšla v Paříži, kde De Chirico strávil část života, poprvé fantaskní, básnivá novela Hebdomeros, která vyvolala veliké vášně mezi jeho publikem, zvláště mezi surrealisty. Fantomatická postava Hebdomera sice má autobiografické rysy, ovšem text, komponovaný jako surreálná persifláž, nemá být komentářem k vlastní tvorbě. Malířova typická obraznost, včetně snových, melancholických kulis a reminiscencí na klasické mytologické či biblické motivy, získává v psaném projevu nečekanou dynamičnost, umocněnou sarkastickým podáním. Ve druhém plánu lze knihu číst i jako kritiku údělu moderního umělce. Chirico zde rovněž podává určité pojmy, jež rozvíjel ve svých teoretických esejích věnovaných malířství, což činí tuto knihu nezbytnou pro ty, kteří se chtějí věnovat Chirikovu výtvarnému dílu.
