John Marwood Cleese se narodil roku 1939 v městečku Weston-super-Mare. Absolvoval Cliftonskou střední školu a práva na Downingově koleji Cambridgeské univerzity. Prvního úspěchu se dočkal ve West Endu a pak jako autor a herec televizního show The Frost Report. Se skupinou Monty Python však přišla mezinárodní sláva. Filmy jako Život Briana nebo Monty Python a Svatý Grál se staly legendami. Mimo skupinu se John Cleese dočkal dalších ovací za televizní sitcom Hotýlek, který napsal se svou první ženou Connie Boothovou, jež tam s ním navíc i hrála. Coby herec se představil v řadě dalších fi lmů, namátkou v těch o Harrym Potterovi nebo Jamesi Bondovi. John Cleese žije v Londýně.
