Forty-two years old Marlow is drinking with four other Englishmen. They have known each other since the beginning of their working lives. Some of them have other jobs now, but they still gather to recall the good old days. Marlow tells his friends a story of his early life, when he travelled to the East as a young man in search of adventure.

Charles Marlow, sails up the Congo River to meet with Kurtz – a prosperous ivory trader and a man of great abilities. Marlow ends up signing a contract and becoming a riverboat captain for a Belgian company that trades in the Congo. He hopes that this contract will give him a good opportunity for career development.

Adolf Verlof runs a sex shop in 1880’s London, but his real profession is even shadier. He’s a so-called "agent provocateur" for the Embassy, whose mission it is to infiltrate and spy on a relatively harmless group of anarchists. His employers are impatiently waiting for the group to do something radical enough that they can use it as an excuse to harden their actions against the many socialist and anarchistic groups that are sprouting up around the country.

"Almayer’s Folly" (1895) is Joseph Conrad’s debut novel. It centers on the Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer, who comes to Borneo with a suitcaseful of dreams. Jeho osud vzbuzuje v některých námořnících soucit, jiní k němu zůstávájí lhostejní. Pět námořníků ho za bouře s nasazením života zachrání z kajuty, zatímco kapitán Alistoun a veterán Singleton si dál hledí svého. V Čechách už vyšlo téměř kompletní Conradovo dílo. Černoch z lodi Narcissus. Námořní příběh, je snad posledním Conradovým větším textem, který zatím nebyl do češtiny přeložen
