Daniel Defoe bol anglický spisovateľ, obchodník, novinár, pamfletista a špión. Najviac ho preslávil román Robinson Crusoe vydaný v roku 1719, o ktorom sa tvrdí, že je na druhom mieste po Biblii v počte prekladov. 

Bol považovaný za jedného z prvých zástancov anglického románu. Defoe napísal mnoho politických traktátov, často mal problémy s úradmi a strávil určité obdobie vo väzení. Intelektuáli a politickí vodcovia venovali pozornosť jeho čerstvým nápadom a občas sa s ním radili.

Bol to všestranný spisovateľ, ktorý vytvoril viac ako tristo diel – kníh, brožúr a časopisov na rôzne témy vrátane politiky, zločinu, náboženstva, manželstva, psychológie a nadprirodzena. Bol tiež priekopníkom obchodnej a ekonomickej žurnalistiky.
