Complete Ghost Stories (Wordsworth Classics) (Wordsworth Collection)
Interest in supernatural phenomena was high during Charles Dickens lifetime. He had always loved a good ghost story himself, particularly at Christmas time, and was open-minded, willing to accept, and indeed put to the test, the existence of spirits. His natural inclinations toward drama and the macabre made him a brilliant teller of ghost tales, and in the twenty stories presented here, which include his celebrated A Christmas Carol, the full range of his gothic talents can be seen. Chilling as some of these stories are, Dickens has managed to inject characteristically grotesque comedy as he writes of revenge, insanity, pre-cognition and dream visions, he indulges also in some debunking of contemporary credulity.

A Tale of Two Cities (Oxford World´s Classics)
As the the bicentennary of the French Revolution draws near, Dickens' historical novel serves as a timely reminder of nineteenth-century reactions to that great upheaval. Set between 1757 and 1793, A Tale of Two Cities views the causes and effects of the Revolution from an essentially private point of view, showing how private experience relates to public history. Dickens' characters are fictional, and their political activity is minimal, yet all are drawn towards the Paris of the Terror, and all become caught up in its web of human suffering and human sacrifice. This edition includes extensive explanatory notes giving crucial background information about the Revolution and Dickens' sources. 'the best story I have written' Charles Dickens

Dickens' second novel is a compelling portrait of the clash between the innocence of childhood and a dark criminal underworld inhabited by a vivid cast of wicked or compromised characters. This new edition aims to place this mythical story of the struggle between good and evil firmly within the context of the early Victorian attitudes to crime and its punishment, and Dickens' own evolution as a novelist.

A helyszín a képzeletbeli észak-angliai gyárváros, Coketown. Gradgrind, az utilitárius elveket valló iskolaigazgató csakis tényeket óhajt a nebulók fejébe verni, képzeletről, "csodálkozásról" hallani sem akar. Ebben a szellemben neveli két gyermekét is: Louisa leányát, akit a lelketlen gyároshoz, Josiah Bounderbyhoz ad feleségül, és fiát, Tomot, aki Bounderby bankjában kap állást. A két fiatal addig éli szeretetlen, örömtelen életét, míg a haszonelvű gondolkodásmód majdnem minden emberséget kiöl belőlük, s egy jóravaló munkás életét is tönkreteszik. Hajdani iskolatársuk, a vándorcirkusz bohócának lánya, a képzelet, a "csodálkozás" gyermeke, Sissy mutat végül utat nekik, hogy legalább valamit helyrehozhassanak mindabból, amit az előző generáció - tanítók, "reformerek", politikusok - elrontott. A nagy történész, Macaulay helytelenítően "komor szocialista" műnek nevezte a regényt, a kapitalista társadalom korabeli romantikus bírálói, John Ruskin és William Morris viszont lelkesen magasztalták, George Orwell pedig a benne megnyilvánuló "nemes haragot" dicsérte. A könyvből készült 1977-es, John Irvin rendezte angol tévéfilmsorozatban többek között Patrick Allen és Edward Fox alakította a főszerepeket.
