V době, kdy Spojenci soudili nacistické válečné zločince na mezinárodním tribunálu v Norimberku, se američtí odborníci, psychiatr Douglas Kelley a psycholog Gustave Gilbert, pokoušeli proniknout do psychiky nacistických pohlavárů s pomocí obsáhlých rozhovorů, zjišťování IQ a Rorschachových testů osobnosti. Gustave Gilbert se domníval, že zlo v mysli válečných zločinců pramenilo z patologicky zvrácené psychiky. Douglas Kelley naopak považoval nacisty za obyčejné lidi, s jakými se lze běžně setkávat na ulicích a jejichž povahu utvářelo prostředí. Kdo z nich měl pravdu?
Autor knihy, psychiatr Joel E. Dimsdale, je přesvědčen, že pravdu měl Kelley i Gilbert. Sám měl příležitost čerpat z odstupu šedesáti let a z výsledků rozvoje moderní psychiatrie, psychologie a neurovědy, a tak se ujal úkolu rozebrat z nového pohledu a podrobně povahu čtyř válečných zločinců: Roberta Leye, Hermanna Göringa, Julia Streichera a Rudolfa Hesse. Rudolf Hess se choval dostatečně bizarně, aby byl podezřelý z vážného duševního onemocnění. V anamnéze Hermanna Göringa nechyběla hospitalizace na psychiatrickém oddělení a závislost na drogách. Julius Streicher se mohl „pochlubit“ četnými policejními záznamy a jeho zvrácenost byla sebedestruktivní. Alkoholismus a poranění mozku vedly u Roberta Leye k těžkým depresím a aberantnímu chování…
