Černou knihu napsal L. Durrell ve svých čtyřiadvaceti letech. Poprvé vyšla v Paříži roku 1938. V USA bylo dílo zakázáno do roku 1960, v Británii dokonce do roku 1973. Ve své době Durrell odmítl vydání v prestižním nakladatelství Faber and Faber, protože nesouhlasil s vypuštěním sexuálních scén. Při příležitosti stého výročí autorova narození vydal týž nakladatel knihu v „plné“ verzi… Román zachycuje skupinku mladých lidí v Londýně na sklonku 30. let. Poflakují se v zaplivaném hotelu, nemají moc peněz, zato si užívají sexu a alkoholu. Opovrhují dobovou morálkou a ostrovní mentalitou vůbec. Místy jde o textové koláže, metaforické zachycení snů a představ. Černá kniha je Durrellův protest, zdvižený prostředníček: proti Anglii, proti zatuchlé morálce.

Justine is the first volume in The Alexandria Quartet, four interlinked novels set in the sensuous, hot environment of Alexandria just before the Second World War. Within this polyglot setting of richly idiosyncratic characters is Justine, wild and intense, wife to the wealthy businessman Nessim, a Mari complaisant.
