Ve svém novém románu se Umberto Eco vrací především do doby svého dětství a dospívání. Protagonistou příběhu je šedesátiletý antikvář Yambo, který se probudí z komatu s těžkou amnézií a pamatuje si jen citáty z literárních děl. Rozhodne se hledat vlastní vzpomínky na půdě rodinného sídla v bednách se starými rodokapsy, komiksy, gramofonovými deskami a školními sešity. Eco i v tomto díle plně rozvinul svou zálibu v intertextových citacích, zaměřil se však hlavně na oblast tzv. triviální literatury, jíž věnoval studii Nadčlověk pro masy. Yambo, stejně jako Eco, dospíval v Itálii ve 30. a 40. letech minulého století. Byl jeho vysněným hrdinou hrabě Monte Christo, Sandokan anebo Duce? Tajemný plamen královny Loany je román o citové výchově za fašismu. Vypráví o lidské odvaze i strachu, slabosti a síle, o ideologii, propagandě a cenzuře doby. Yambo objevuje útržky vzpomínek a skládá z nich svůj vlastní život. Eco–vypravěč přitom využívá narativní metodu, již nazval „mlžným efektem“. Při četbě románu jen pozvolna rozhrnujeme závoje mlhy zapomnění a snového oparu, abychom v dálce zahlédli tajemný plamen královny Loany, který září v hlubině nevědomí každého z nás.
Lacná kniha Lector in fabula (-50%)
Kniha Umberta Eca (1932) Lector in fabula vyšla poprvé italsky v roce 1979. Pochází z Ecova vědecky nejproduktivnějšího období, kdy rozvíjí jak obecnou sémiotiku, tak i problematiku interpretace textu a s ní souvisící otázku rolí, kompetencí a ohraničení čtenářovy aktivity v rámci rozumění textu. Zatímco v předchozí stěžejní práci, Teorii sémiotiky (1975), se pokusil vytvořit teoreticko-analytický model obecného fungování sémiotiky jakožto nauky o významu, v knize Lector in fabula se věnuje domýšlení sémiotických pravidel na konkrétních, především literárních textech. Jde tedy o knihu „praktičtější“, byť psanou opět s ambicí dobrat se co nejuniverzálnějších řešení. Proto se tato kniha stala nejen repertoárem podnětů, jež byly v dalších desetiletích literární vědou domýšleny a rozvíjeny, ale stala se – a dodnes je – i klíčovým textem pro výuku interpretace textu.
