Král si Baudolina oblíbí, ujme se jej a posílá ho na studia do Francie, kde chlapec začíná spolu s dalšími spřádat své sny o tajemném křesťanském království Kněze Jana, ležícím kdesi daleko v Asii. Baudolino
Hlavný hrdina románu Baudolino, syn prostého sedliaka z talianskej Alessandrie, sa vďaka šťastnej náhode ocitne na dvore cisára Svätej ríše rímskej Fridricha II. Barbarossu a stane sa cisárovými adoptívnym synom. Panovník ho pošle na štúdiá do Paríža a tam Baudolino prenikne do veselej spoločnosti študentov. Spolu s priateľmi neskôr sprevádza cisára na križiackej výprave do Jeruzalema. Cestou cisár za záhadných okolností zomrie a Baudolino sa vydá na dobrodružnú výpravu do vzdialených východných krajín hľadať legendárnu ríšu kňaza Jána.
