Epica je holandská symfonická metalová skupina, ktorú založil gitarista a spevák Mark Jansen po jeho odchode z After Forever. Vznikla ako symfonická metalová skupina s gotickými tendenciami, neskôr Epica zakomponovala do svojho zvuku silné death metalové vplyvy. Od tretieho albumu sa prejavili aj progresívne metalové vplyvy. Okrem toho kapela často používa thrash metal a groove metalové riffy, blackmetalové pasáže (väčšinou v technike bicích), power metalové momenty a odkazy na arabskú hudbu. Niektoré skladby majú aj elektronické odtiene, djentové prechody a folk metalové melódie odvodené z blízkovýchodných, čínskych a keltských tradícií. Epica je tiež známa tým, že venuje pozornosť vokálnym linkám, ktoré na rozdiel od ťažkého kontextu splietajú veľmi chytľavé, ľahko držateľné, sofistikované a emotívne melódie. Základom zvuku kapely je použitie sopránových vokálov a growlovaných vokálov v podaní Simone Simons a Marka Jansena. Predovšetkým píšu vlastné texty, ktoré sa často zaoberajú filozofickými, psychologickými, duchovnými, morálnymi, vedeckými, environmentálnymi, sociálno-politickými, globálnymi a aktuálnymi a osobnými témami. Epica je známa aj širokým využitím orchestra a operných zborov. „Requiem for the Indifferent“ je piaty, ktorý vyšil 9. marca 2012. Album bol prvým, ktorý obsahoval sóla klávesáka Coena Janssena, ktoré sa na ostatných vydaniach kapely vyskytujú len veľmi zriedkavo, a bol posledným albumom, na ktorom sa objavil pôvodný člen Yves Huts na basgitare.
