"A Simple Heart", also called Un cour simple or Le perroquet in French, is a story about a servant girl named Felicité. After her one and only love Théodore purportedly marries a well-to-do woman to avoid conscription, Felicité quits the farm she works on and heads for Pont-l'Éveque where she immediately picks up work in a widow's house as a servant. She is very loyal, and easily lends her affections to the two children of her mistress, Mme Aubain. She gives entirely to others, and although many take advantage of her she is unaffected. She is the epitome of a selfless character, and Flaubert shows how true altruism – the reality of being truly selfless – is the reward in itself. Whatever comes her way she is able to deal with it.

This book, which Flaubert researched painstakingly, is largely an exercise in sensuous and violent exoticism. The Carthaginian costumes described therein even left traces on the fashions of the time. Flaubert azonban jóval többet adott, mint egy egyszerű, köznapi és tipikus történet nagyszerű leírását, regénybe foglalását. A Bovaryné klasszikus példa arra, hogy a regény sem egyszerű, egysíkú műalkotás: rétegei, egymást erősítő, de sokszor egymást tudatosan el is takaró rétegei, szintjei hallatlan bonyolult szerkezetet adnak a műnek, olyan formát, amely egyszerre és elválaszthatatlanul képes szinte vadromantikusan szenvedélyes, hatalmas érzelmi viharokat kiváltó hatásra és az objektív, konstatáló nyugalmú, eredeti értelemben vett epikai látásmód felkeltésére. A regény éppen többértelműsége, bonyolultsága miatt mindenkor a legkülönbözőbb olvasók kedvence volt: kezdők éppúgy örömmel kaptak rajta, mint irodalmi ínyencek.

Nowhere do Flaubert's explorations of the relation of signs to the objects they signify reach a more thorough study than in this work. Bouvard and Pécuchet systematically confuse signs and symbols with reality, an assumption that causes them much suffering, as it does for Emma Bovary and Frédéric Moreau. Yet here, due to the explicit focus on books and knowledge, Flaubert's ideas reach a climax. Consequently, the book is widely read as a precursor to modern theories on semiotics and postmodernism. The relentless failure of Bouvard and Pécuchet to learn anything from their adventures raises the question of what is knowable. Whenever they achieve some small measure of success (a rare occurrence), it is the result of unknown external forces beyond their comprehension. In this sense, they strongly resemble Antony in The Temptation of St. Anthony, a work which addresses similar epistemological themes as they relate to classical literature. Lionel Trilling wrote that the novel expresses a belief in the alienation of human thought from human experience. The worldview that emerges from the work, one of human beings proceeding relentlessly forward without comprehending the results of their actions or the processes of the world around them, does not seem an optimistic one. But given that Bouvard and Pécuchet do gain some comprehension of humanity's ignorant state (as demonstrated by their composition of the Dictionary of Received Ideas), it could be argued that Flaubert allows for the possibility of relative enlightenment.
