Kniha představuje českému čtenáři nejznámější novozélandskou spisovatelku Janet Frameovou. Kniha obsahuje novelu Sněhuláku, sněhuláku a i soubor 24 povídek Laguna. Čtyřiadvacet povídek bylo napsáno na konci čtyřicátých let 20. století. V roce 1951, v době jejího prvního vydání, žila Janet Frameová v „péči“ novozélandských psychiatrických léčeben, neboť u ní diagnostikovali schizofrenii. Tato její prvotina získala nejprestižnější novozélandské literární ocenění The Hubert Church Prose Award za rok 1951. V polovině 50. let jí na londýnské klinice sdělili, že schizofrenií netrpěla - je jen extrémně uzavřenou ženou. Frameová se pak na sedm let usadila v Británii. Je autorkou 11 románů, pěti povídkových sbírek a knihy veršů. Jak říká ve své slavné autobiografii: „Moje psaní mě zachránilo“. Z autorčiny autobiografické trilogie vychází též film Anděl u mého stolu. Film získal na MFF Benátkách roku 1990 Zvláštní cenu poroty a cenu FIPRESCI. Obraznost její prózy má říz poezie, avšak necílí jen k estetickému účinku, hledá smysl, nevyhýbá se ironii, odloupává vrstvy nucených fasád – vytržení smyslů, jež je toho výsledkem, je přesto prosto ega či sebelítosti. Frameová umí čarovat z vod dětského světa, naznačit význam drobným detailem, svůj příběh vyřezává s mistrnou pečlivostí a on proto plyne, plyne k nepředvídanému.
