Anna Katharine Greenová (11. 11.1846 - 11. 4.1935) byla jednou z prvních autorek detektivek v Americe a vynikala psaním dobře vypointovaných, právnicky přesných příběhů. Greenová byla nazývána "matkou detektivního románu". Agatha Christie ve své autobiografii uvedla vliv Greenové na svou vlastní beletristickou tvorbu. Leavenworthský případ (1878) je její první román a odehrává se v New Yorku. Román začíná ve chvíli, kdy je bohatý vysloužilý obchodník Horatio Leavenworth zastřelen ve své knihovně. Když se případem zabývají vyšetřovatel Ebenezer Gryce a právník Everett Raymond, vyjde najevo, že nikdo nemohl opustit sídlo na Manhattanu dříve, než bylo druhý den objeveno tělo. V průběhu příběhu se do vyšetřování zapojí Leavenworthovy osiřelé neteře Mary a Eleanore, služebná Hannah a záhadný pán, který se objeví na místě činu.
Leavenworthský případ se okamžitě stal bestsellerem. Kniha byla populární v Americe i v Evropě.
