While not as gifted a prose stylist as Scott Turow, Grisham is among the best plotters in the thriller business and he infuses his books with a moral valence and creative vision that set them apart from their peers. Und dabei spart er nicht mit Überraschungen -- bevor der Roman richtig angefangen hat, ist die titelgebende Hauptfigur bereits tot. Der 79-jährige Richter a. D. Reuben V. Atlee fordert seine beiden Söhne in einem knappen Brief auf, bei ihm vorzusprechen. Er beabsichtige, die Aufteilung seines Nachlasses zu regeln. Sein Sohn Ray Atlee lebt als frustierter Juraprofessor, dem es nicht gelungen ist, in die überdimensionalen Fußstapfen seines Vaters zu treten, von seiner Frau verlassen in Virginia. Dem Treffen mit seinem Vater und seinem drogenabhängigen jüngeren Bruder Forrest sieht er mit einiger Bangigkeit entgegen. Als er in dem heruntergekommenen Haus in einem ruhigen Viertel von Clanton, Mississippi, eintrifft, kann er allerdings nur noch den Tod des alten Mannes feststellen, der auf dem Sofa scheinbar friedlich entschlafen ist. Endgültig aus der Fassung gebracht wird Ray allerdings von mehreren Kartons voller Bargeld, auf die er in Richter Atlees Bibliothek stößt. Eiligst lässt er sie verschwinden und rechtfertigt sich mit der -- wohl begründeten -- Vermutung, Forrest würde sie ansonsten doch nur schnurstracks zum nächsten Dealer tragen. Der offizielle Nachlass wird gerecht aufgeteilt, und beide Brüder ziehen wieder ihrer Wege. Für Ray hat das eigentliche Abenteuer jedoch erst angefangen: Auf seiner Suche nach dem Ursprung der Geldbündel muss er bald feststellen, dass er nicht der Einzige ist, der von den drei Millionen Dollar weiß, und dass seine Gegenspieler deutlich besser auf eine Auseinandersetzung vorbereitet sind, die außerhalb des Gesetzes stattfindet. John Grisham wird mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit vorgeworfen, er sei ein nur mäßig begabter Stilist und würde übertrieben mit Fakten um sich werfen. Beides trifft auch auf Der Richter zu, geht aber grundsätzlich an der Sache vorbei: Grisham schreibt Thriller, die die Stärken und Schwächen des US-amerikanischen Justizsystems ausleuchten. Entsprechend haben seine Romane eher den Charakter von Fallbeschreibungen, die großen Wert auf eine detailgenaue Schilderung der Sachverhalte legen. Ray Atlee gehört zu Grishams sympathischsten Protagonisten und setzt damit einen Trend fort, der sich bereits in A Painted House abzeichnet: Grisham nimmt sich verstärkt Zeit für Haupt- und Nebenfiguren, was der Glaubwürdigkeit seiner Erzählung ausgesprochen dienlich ist. --Felix Darwin
