The Diary of a Nobody
Having just moved into a fine, six-roomed residence, “the Laurels”, the Pooters are ready to begin a new life. Charles, the paterfamilias, a lowly clerk in a City of London firm, begins to keep a diary, one that, over the next fifteen months, will provide a record of the small trials and tribulations – as well as the preoccupations, aspirations and social anxieties – of a late-Victorian family. Serialized in Punch between 1888 and 1889, and later expanded and illustrated for publication in volume form in 1892, The Diary of a Nobody, the Grossmith brothers’ highest achievement, is a comic masterpiece and arguably one of the greatest artistic collaborations of all time.
Deník pana Nuly
Proč by si londýnský úředníček pan Pooter, fanatický ctitel vžitého pořádku a skladatel „vtipných“ slovních hříček, nemohl psát deník? Není sice žádná veličina a nepřitahuje pohledy veřejnosti, ale důležitý se cítí jako málokdo. Dokonalost není maličkost, a v jejím jménu čelí pan Pooter neochvějně posměškům přátel, potížím s řemeslníky a se sousedy, nezvedenostem a neuctivým hláškám líného syna Lupina i odevzdanosti své Karličky a ředevším svým vlastním trapasům. Takový už je holt život. Samolibost, příčinu většiny trablů, autorovi(a možná i sobě) nakonec rádi odpustíme, klasický laskavý anglický humor je totiž osvobozující. „Lituji pouze, že jsem si deník nezačal psáti již v mládí,“ povzdechne si pan Pooter – a s ním i my, jeho čtenáři!

The Diary of a Nobody
Why should I not publish my diary? I have often seen reminiscences of people I have never even heard of, and I fail to see - because I do not happen to be a 'Somebody' - why my diary should not be interesting.' The Diary of a Nobody (1892) created a cultural icon, an English archetype. Anxious, accident-prone, occasionally waspish, Charles Pooter has come to be seen as the epitome of English suburban life. His diary chronicles encounters with difficult tradesmen, the delights of home improvements, small parties, minor embarrassments, and problems with his troublesome son. The suburban world he inhabits is hilariously and painfully familiar in its small-mindedness and its essential decency. Both celebration and critique, The Diary of a Nobody has often been imitated, but never bettered. This edition features Weedon Grossmith's hilarious illustrations and is complemented by an enjoyable introduction discussing the book's social background and suburban fiction as a genre.
