Čarodějnický příběh o útlaku a vzpouře
V zemích Bethelu, kde je Prorokovo slovo zákonem, je samotná existence Immanuelle Mooreové hřích. Svazek její matky s mužem jiné rasy uvrhl dříve váženou rodinu v nemilost, a tak se Immanuelle snaží co nejlépe uctívat Otce, řídit se Svatým protokolem a žít pokorně, zbožně a v naprostém podrobení, stejně jako všechny ostatní ženy v Bethelu.
Jenže jednoho dne ji nešťastná náhoda zavede do zapovězeného Černolesa obklopujícího Bethel, kam první prorok kdysi zahnal čtyři mocné čarodějnice a potom je tam zavraždil. Jejich duše lesem stále obcházejí, a když jim Immanuelle stane tváří v tvář, věnují jí dar — deník její mrtvé matky, která k Immanuellinu překvapení kdysi v lese hledala útočiště.
Immanuelle je tajemstvími deníku fascinovaná, ale nedokáže pochopit, jak se její matka mohla s čarodějnicemi spolčit. Jenže když se začne dozvídat strašlivou pravdu o Církvi a její minulosti, uvědomí si, že skutečná hrozba pro Bethel tkví v jeho vlastní temnotě.
