Sto let uplyne v příštím roce od smrti amerického povídkáře Williama Sydneye Portera, známého pod pseudonymem O´Henry, jehož dílo připomínáme výborem povídek Kvadratura kruhu. O´Henry napsal přes tři sta povídek, k nimž mu náměty poskytl vlastní pestrý život. Neklidná krev zavedla O´Henryho do všech koutů Ameriky, vystřídal mnohá zaměstnání, dostal se i do vězení, když jako účetní a pokladník upadl do podezření ze zpronevěry. Ve vězení napsal čtrnáct povídek, a to byl začátek jeho spisovatelské dráhy. Jeho povídkám nechybí laskavý humor, ale zároveň ani bezprostřední a ironický pohled na životy drobných lidí, v jejichž osudech před námi vyvstává „země nekonečných možností“ z počátku minulého století.
