Po událostech popsaných v Lazarově jevu se lidští obyvatelé Pandory usilovně snaží vydobýt další půdu z běsnících moří planety. Budují nové osady, avšak ve stínu těchto osad hladoví děti. Planetě vládne ctižádostivý klon, jehož represivní režim nutí zoufalé osadníky k povstáním. Odpovědí vládnoucích jsou další krutosti, neposlušnost je trestána hladomorem. Hlavní nadějí bojovníků odporu se stává Crista Galli, žena, o níž jsou mnozí přesvědčeni, že je božským dítětem. A kolem ní se soustředí osvobozenecký boj.

Třetí díl ságy nás zavádí do doby, kdy Paul Atreides, spasitel Duny, mizí v poušti. Za sebou zanechává Arrakis tak, jak si ji představoval - i nepředstavoval.
