Abstract Expressionism

“Abstract expressionism” refers to the non-representational use of form and color as a means of expression that emerged in America in the 1940s, largely thanks to the innovative work of Arshile Gorky. Interestingly, abstract expressionism is considered to be the first movement originating in America to have a worldwide influence. Two very different sub-categories of the movement developed: “action painting” (exemplified notably by Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock) and “color field painting,” made most famous by Mark Rothko. Abstract expressionists strove to express pure emotion directly on canvas, via color and especially texture (the surface quality of the brushstroke), by embracing “accidents,” and celebrating painting itself as a communicative action. Artists featured: William Baziotes, Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Theodoros Stamos, Clyfford Still, Mark Tobey, Bradley Walter Tomlin.

Lucio Fontana

Italian artist Lucio Fontana tore apart the modern art establishmentliterally. Trained initially as a sculptor, Fontana (1899-1968) blurred the lines between painting and sculpture by creating works that combined both form and color in a spatial con text, most famously exemplified by his slashed canvases of the 1950s and 60s. Fontanas work was truly conceptual, in that the ideas he wanted to express were more important than the actual work itself; with titles like Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Con cept) and Scultura Spaziale (Spatial Sculpture), his pieces served as visual explanations of his ideas. From his early work in collaborating with architects through his years in Buenos Aires (where, in the mid-1940s, he published the famous "White Ma nifesto" and "Technical Manifesto of Spatialism", among others), his experimental light installations of the early 1950s, and his later experiments with various media, this book covers the entire career of Italys pioneering abstract artist.Upozornen ie: Vzhľadom na častejšie obmeny vydaní tejto knihy v zahraničí, kus, ktorý vám zašleme, nemusí mať rovnakú obálku ako je zobrazená tu. Abstract Expressionism

Abstract expressionism—the non-representational use of paint as a means of personal expression—emerged in America in the 1940s, inspired by the innovative work of Arshile Gorky. Considered the first art movement originating in the Americas to have a worldwide influence, abstract expressionism spawned two very different sub-categories: action painting (exemplified by Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock) and color field painting, made most famous by Mark Rothko. Abstract expressionists strove to express emotions and ideas directly on canvas via color, form and texture—the quality of brushstrokes and other marks, the dripping of paint, for example—while embracing accident and chance, and celebrating the very act of painting.

Jasper Johns - Art

Though his work is often categorized as Pop Art for its use of popular iconography and household objects, Jasper Johns can also be described as a Neo-Dadaist. Using wax-based paint, plaster relief, collage, and even commonplace objects such as brooms and rulers in his paintings, Johns achieves a sculptural texture in his work. He is arguably most known for his flag paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), though other themes, in cluding targets, numbers, letters, and maps, are also famously recurrent. Johns is widely considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century.

Fontana

Debuting in Milan, Fontana settled in Paris in the mid 1930s, where he joined the Abstraction-Creation group and created expressionist sculptures in ceramic and bronze. He later moved to Argentina, where he developed his highly influential Technical Manifesto of Spatialism, a modernist marvel, characteristic of post-war innovation and fuelled by a forward-looking synthesis of art, technology, and science. With Spatialism, the artist sought to project color and form into spaces, most famously in his minimally ripped, or slashed canvases, such as his extensive Spatial Concept Waiting series. This dependable artist introduction follows Fontana on his personal and artistic journey to explore the evolution of his pioneering ideas as well as their remarkable legacy on conceptual and performance art which flourished in his wake.
