Vigdis Hjorth 1952-ben született, Oslóban. Filozófiai, irodalomtudományi és politikatudományi tanulmányai után 1983-ban sikeres gyerekkönyvekkel kezdte pályáját, 1987 óta pedig mintegy húsz, felnőttek számára írt műve jelent meg. A norvég közönség hozzászokott ahhoz, hogy Vigdis Hjorth a legkínosabb, szőnyeg alá söpört témákat sokszor természetes, közvetlen, akár humoros hangon tárgyalja.
