The young orphan Pollyanna goes to live with her wealthy but stern Aunt Polly in Vermont. She brings with her an infectious optimism and what she calls the "just being glad" game.

Pollyanna, now cured of her crippling spinal injury, spends her time teaching the "glad game" to new town, and a very bitter woman Mrs. Carew. Along the way she makes new friends, such as Sadie, and is courted by two childhood friends, Jimmy and Jamie: Jimmy is a hale and hearty aspiring architect, Jamie is a delicate literary genius whose withered legs compel him to rely on a wheelchair and crutches. Jimmy also finds out his family's background, and how he ended up alone.

When Pollyanna Whittier becomes orphaned, she goes to live with her rather strict Aunt Polly. And Aunt Polly is not at all prepared for Pollyanna! With her infectious energy and her determination to see the best in every situation, Pollyanna brings sunshine into the lives of everyone around her. But not everyone wants it – and she has a lot of work to do to persuade some of them that there is a good side to everything.
