Alice a Alfie mají za sebou hrozivé nehody. Alfie přišel o nohu při autohavárii, Alice byla popálená při požáru, který propukl v její kanceláři. Teď leží v nemocnici jenom kousek od sebe, ale nikdy se neviděli, protože Alicina postel na nemocničním oddělení pro dlouhodobé pacienty je obehnána závěsy a její obyvatelka nechce nikoho vidět. Ani sebe. Alfie už je v nemocnici měsíce a nová pacientka mezi stálým osazenstvem je pro něj obrovský zážitek. Chce se s ní spřátelit, ale brzy pochopí, že to nebude tak snadné. Alice s nikým nemluví, vidět ji smějí pouze sestřičky. Jenomže Alfie je bojovník, a navíc odhodlaný se spřátelit s každým, koho potká. Postupně se oba i přes závěsy seznámí a brzy tráví hodiny tím, že si povídají a sdílejí soukromé vtípky. Alfie umí Alici rozesmát a z ní se stane jeho důvěrnice. Jejich přátelství postupně přerůstá v něco víc, ale jak se jejich zdravotní stav zlepšuje a blíží se návrat do normálního života, musejí se rozhodnout, zda budou pokračovat ve vztahu s někým, kdo je sice podržel v těch nejhorších chvílích, ale nikdy neviděl jejich tvář.

Alice Gunnersleyová a Alfie Mack by se nejspíš nikdy nepotkali, kdyby oběma do života nezasáhla hrozivá nehoda. Teď leží v nemocnici jako dlouhodobí pacienti jen pár metrů od sebe a každý den si hodiny povídají – přes závěsy kolem lůžek se však zatím ještě neviděli. A i když to mezi nimi zpočátku trochu drhne, z jejich nočního povídání a soukromých vtípků brzo začne vzkvétat něco víc než přátelství. A opět se ukazuje, že láska bývá skoro vždy slepá.
