Protagonistou románu současného německého autora (narozen 1975) je mladý fyzik David Mahler, který se vědecky zabývá problémem času. Jedné noci zjistí, že druhý termodynamický zákon neplatí, čas nepostupuje lineárně dopředu. Ve stavu snového vytržení sepíše třicet stran matematicko-fyzikálního zdůvodnění. Čísla a vzorce jsou správné, základní fyzikální axiom tedy neplatí, minulost není minulost, zítřek může být včerejškem, minulé se teprve stane. Mahler se snaží svůj objev, který otřásá světem v samých základech, zveřejnit. Nepodaří se mu však proniknout do vnitřních kruhů vědeckého establishmentu, proto hledá podporu slavného fyzika, nositele Nobelovy ceny Borise Valentinova. Při honbě za nedostižitelným vědcem prožívá Mahler realitu tak, jako by byl jeho převratný objev potvrzen — svět se vykolejil z času. Mahlerovi se Valentinova nepodaří dostihnout, slavný vědec uniká. Osamělost, kterou Mahler trpí už od dětství, se stupňuje do nesnesitelnosti. Při osudném míjení Valentinova na závěr, kdy je setkání zdánlivě na dosah, a přesto nemožné, Mahler pod obrovitým zářícím sluncem umírá.
