Samozrejme, ani román More je môj brat sa nevyhol osudu ostatných Kerouacových kníh - porovnávaniu s kľúčovým dielom Na ceste. Aj po polstoročí avantgardne pôsobiaci text zaradil Kerouaca po bok jeho veľkého vzoru Jamesa Joycea a iných románových velikánov. Vyriecť ortieľ v nerovnom súboji s kultovou knihou Na ceste nie je ťažké, neprekonal ju žiaden z množstva ostatných Kerouacových románov. Napriek tomu je objavená prvotina skvelým čítaním. Autor v nej akoby naberal dych pre svoje vrcholné dielo, téma vzbury jednotlivca k obmedzeniam spoločnosti, spôsob písania a zjavná autobiografickosť vytvárajú tú známu kerouacovskú atmosféru. „Som na ceste," hovorí nadšene jeden z protagonistov, netušiac, že vymyslel svojmu autorovi názov, ktorý sa o desaťročie neskôr stane literárnou legendou. Tá sa (spolu s Kvílením Allena Ginsberga) stala základným literárnym symbolom bítnického hnutia Ameriky 50. a 60. rokov. „Bolo to zložité obdobie americkej histórie," dodáva Danica Hollá. „Bítnici nepadli z neba, literatúra a spoločnosť nemôžu bez seba existovať. Jack Kerouac svůj bezpochyby nejlepší román Vize Codyho psal přibližně ve stejné době jako své nejznámější a nejprodávanější dílo, "bibli" beat generation Na cestě, to znamená počátkem 50. let. A přestože všichni, nejen jeho přátelé, například Allen Ginsberg, ale i další, stejně jako nakladatelští redaktoři věděli, o jaký klenot se jedná, v úplnosti vyšly Vize Codyho až v roce 1973, čtyři roky po Kerouakově předčasné smrti. Vysvětlení takové prodlevy je prosté: Kerouac zde jednoduše předběhl nejen svou dobu, ale i její literární vkus, a román tak byl po svém napsání příliš "horkým zbožím", aby si nakladatelé troufli vrhnout jej na trh. V čem tedy tkví jedinečnost a velikost Vizí Codyho? Především, Jack Kerouac se rozhodl odhodit veškerou autocenzuru, čteme zde tedy velice otevřené pasáže, jaké například v textu v podstatě cudného vyprávění Na cestě nenajdeme, Kerouac zároveň dává zcela průchod svému básnickému nadání. Součástí románu, který je věnován Kerouakově velkému příteli a inspiraci, Nealu Cassadymu (známe jej i z jiných románů, jako Deana Moriartyho v Na cestě, i Codyho Pomeraye), ve všech směrech zcela nespoutanému živlu, je přepis magnetofonových nahrávek jejich rozhovorů - a vedle literární hodnoty mají i historický význam, osvětlují totiž jejich minulost i zážitky dalších slavných beatniků, například Williama Burroughse, a opět jsou zcela otevřené. Jak píše v předmluvě Allen Ginsberg, jde o "naprostou výměnu informací a myšlenek plných lásky mezi dvěma muži, z nichž každý nabízí tomu druhému příběh své mysli - nevšední situace, jíž máme to privilegium být svědky." Kniha vychází v českém překladu vůbec poprvé a všem milovníkům nejen beat generation, ale dobré a poctivé literatury jako takové nabízí zcela nevšední zážitek. Protože, jak píše Ginsberg, "obejdeme-li Kerouaka, necháme stranou nesmrtelné srdce, knihu, jež je obrovitou mantrou porozumění a vroucí lásky k americkému muži, k jedné zápasící heroické duši."

Published in its entirety for the first time, "The Sea is My Brother" is Jack Kerouac's first novel. Described by Kerouac as being about 'man's simple revolt from society as it is, with the inequalities, frustration, and self-inflicted agonies', the 158-page handwritten manuscript was not published during his lifetime. He wrote in his notes for the project that the characters were 'the vanishing American, the big free by, the American Indian, the last of the pioneers, the last of the hoboes'. This novel follows the fortunes of Wesley Martin, a man who Kerouac said 'loved the sea with a strange, lonely love; the sea is his brother and sentences. He goes down.' Kerouac began this work not long after his first tour as a Merchant Marine on the S.S. Dorchester in the late summer of 1942 during which he kept a journal detailing the gritty daily routine of life at sea. Inspired by the trip, which exemplified Kerouac's love for adventure and the character traits of his fellow shipmates, the journals were spontaneous sketches of those experiences that were woven into a short novel soon after disembarking from the S.S. Dorchester in October of 1942. This edition also contains a number of other fragments of Kerouac's early writing and letters between Kerouac and Sebastian Sampas all from the early 1940s, as well as many images.

V roce 2010 vychází v USA dosud nevydaný text z pozůstalosti Jacka Kerouaca, jeho první rozsáhlejší dílo. Kerouac ho napsal na základě svých zkušeností ze služby u obchodního námořnictva. Vydavatelé jeho text doplnili řadou dalších materiálů - tematicky a časově souvisejícími prozaickými fragmenty a také dobovou korespondencí s přítelem Sebastianem Sampasem, básníkem, která obsahuje Kerouacovy komentáře k vlastnímu psaní a řadu dalších prozaických i básnických pokusů.

The Subterraneans haunt the bars and clubs of San Francisco, surviving on a diet of booze and benzedrine, Proust and Verlaine. Living amongst them is Leo, an aspiring writer, and Mardou, half-Indian, half-Negro, beautiful and neurotic. Their bitter-sweet and ill-starred love affair sees Kerouac at his most evocative. Many regard this as being Kerouac's most touching and tender book.
